What are we looking for?
We are looking for a highly qualified substitute Residential Counselor for the Serenity House Community Re-integration program. This OASAS-certified program provides a supportive, structured, sober living environment for individuals in recovery from substance use disorder. Residential Counselors support each Resident’s progress towards the goals outlined in their individualized service plans and help maintain a safe environment in the home. Substitute Residential Counselors help to provide coverage for shifts on an as-needed basis to support the 24/7 staffing model of our Community Re-integration program, receiving the same training and support as full- and part-time Residential Counselors.
Your overall essential responsibilities will be the following:
- Prioritizing best practices in person-centered care concerning each resident’s individual dignity and integrity, including their unique goals.
- Taking care of and ensuring that our residents are safe and taken care of.
- Provide orderliness, cleanliness, and structure to the program’s day-to-day operations.
- Developing, fostering, and maintaining positive, collaborative relationships with residents, their families, and the SJCS team
Physical and environmental conditions include:
- The work requires no unusual demand for physical effort but is an active position.
The hiring range for this position ranges from $20 to $21 per hour and is dependent on experience.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications
- High School diploma or equivalent (required).
- One or more years of relevant experience (required).
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate or bachelor’s degree in human services or related field (desired).
- CRPA or working toward a CRPA certification (desired).
- CASAC or working towards CASAC certification (desired).
- Understanding of and ability to provide:
- Motivational Interviewing,
- Person-Centered support,
- Mental Health First Aid
- Ability to gain and demonstrate a thorough understanding of St. John’s Community Services policies and procedures.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with landlord partners, representatives from other agencies, other benefits/service providers, and the public.
- Ability to use sound judgment when making decisions.
- Ability to know professional and interpersonal boundaries.
- Ability to demonstrate a consistently empathetic and assume-the-best attitude in all interactions with residents and staff.
- Ability to stay committed to empowering residents to achieve their own individualized service plan goals.
- Ability to build trust and rapport with residents from a person-centered approach while holding appropriate professional boundaries in all interactions.
- Ability to be a proactive and flexible team member, including a willingness to ask for clarification, help, and feedback as needed.
- Knowledge of the utilization of technological tools for timely and accurate documentation.
- Knowledge of substance use treatment, recovery culture, concerns, issues, and trends.
- Ability to demonstrate a calm, composed, and de-escalating demeanor and appropriately utilize de-escalation and crisis intervention skills as needed.
- Excellent interpersonal communication, verbal and written.
All SJCS employees must:
- Obtain a valid health certificate to meet SJCS or current funding authority requirements as required.
- Meet SJCS and the funding authority requirement of criminal background and record checks.
