St. Johns County Board of County Commissioners is seeking a Part-time Recreation Assistant for our well-established Parks & Recreation Department whose headquarters are located in beautiful St. Augustine, Florida.

St Johns County Parks & Recreation is responsible for providing safe, fun, and healthy recreational opportunities to residents and visitors, alike. Our county boasts nearly 50 active and passive parks, 12 boat ramps, 7 community centers, over 40 miles of scenic coastline, a fishing pier, an 18-hole golf course, and hundreds of youth and adult activities and programs. Our department is as diverse as the natural ecosystems that surround us. The Parks & Recreation Department works together as a team to create outstanding programming that makes recreational opportunities available to our whole community.
A newly appointed Recreation Assistant will be responsible for assisting in the coordination and implementation of recreation programs within the span of their control and within the department. This position is posted primarily at the Ketterlinus Gym in St. Augustine. This position is part-time with an average of 20 hours per week working with our afterschool enrichment program, along with summer camp, and special events.
Examples of Duties:
The ideal Recreation Assistant candidate must possess St. Johns County’s core values of compassion, innovation, and trustworthiness and must work well in a collaborative team environment. Some of the specific tasks include but are not limited to:
- Provides support for program operations, including but not limited to: care of children, outreach, set-up and break down for events, and general customer service.
- Assists with the implementation and instruction of curriculum. May collect or disseminate program documents, such as schedules, applications, or waivers, as assigned.
- Assists with the facilitation of conflict resolution or other disciplinary issues between participants, guardians/parents, and staff. Directs participants in the proper usage of County facilities.
- Opens and closes facilities for regular operations, special events, and rentals. Assists with the maintenance and proper use of assigned recreational facilities.
- Supports department-wide initiatives, including but not limited to fundraising activities and campaigns; developing informational and educational materials; membership and participant drives; and other special events.
- Maintains a part-time presence on the job. This includes working a variety of mornings, afternoons, evenings, and weekends.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Candidates for the Recreation Assistant position are encouraged to apply if they meet the following minimum qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent recognized certification.
- Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with at least one year of experience in recreation programs, child care, or other related fields.
- Must possess and maintain a valid Florida driver’s license and any other endorsements necessary to legally operate vehicles used while assigned to this position.
- Must possess good interpersonal and communication skills in order to serve others.
- Must be able to comprehend, speak and write the English language.
- Must be able to operate a computer.
