Environmental Scientist I or II

Job Summary: This is professional work performing data collection and data management functions and assisting project scientists in environmental restoration and environmental management projects. 

 

Job duties include: 

  • Leads, mentors, and performs water quality sampling preparation and fieldwork.
  • Leads, mentors, and performs biological monitoring and sampling.
  • Acts as technical lead for assigned specialized monitoring responsibilities including data entry and QA for special projects. Interfaces with District FDEP sampling coordinator, partnering with ES I staff for Status site recon, sampling and other coordination.
  • Leads and assists with special projects.
  • Performs field data entry and documentation.
  • Performs maintenance of field and related support equipment, ensures completion of maintenance logs and calibration logs.

 

Skilled In: 

Truck, boat, and trailer operation; operation of monitoring devices including continuous monitoring sensors, data sondes, sediment sampling equipment, and a wide variety of water sampling equipment; operation of GPS. 

 

Minimum Qualifications: 

Environmental Scientist I requires a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in biology, limnology, chemistry, botany, environmental science, or related field. 

 

Environmental Scientist II requires a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in biology, limnology, chemistry, botany, zoology, or a field directly related to natural resource management and two years professional experience in the environmental field. 

 

Professional experience in an environmental field can substitute on a year-for-year basis for the required college education. 

 

SJRWMD has determined this to be a mandatory-testing position as described in Section 440.102, Florida Statutes. Any offer of employment for a mandatory-testing position and will be contingent upon successfully passing a drug screening paid by SJRWMD. Physical Requirements/Working Environment: 

Endure harsh outdoor environments in uncomfortable/extreme temperatures for any and all activities, inclement weather, and remote locations; lift and/or move equipment; operate or learn to operate vehicles/vessels to access sites (e.g. outboard motorboats, four-wheel drive trucks, airboats, ATVs, Marsh Master). 

Routine physical efforts include collecting water samples from boats, bridges, streams, etc., and may include standing and hiking for long periods of time, construction and maintenance of experimental structures, planting vegetation, wading through dense submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV), swimming, going underwater to count SAV with sampling equipment. Activities may be in close proximity to wildlife (including snakes and alligators); Operation of boats, trucks and trailers may occur in all weather conditions; Scheduling may involve tight deadlines.  

 

Expectations: Maintain a priority of safety, data integrity, good communication, working well with others as a team; make effective, consistent, and defensible decisions in the field. 

 

Licenses: 

Valid State of Florida Driver’s License.

Starting Salary Range:  

Environmental Scientist I$45,864.00 - $57,324.80 

Environmental Scientist II$49,067.20 - $61339.20 

Starting salary is based on qualifications and experience.
