TITLE: Assistant Director of Nursing Services, Director of Education
DEPARTMENT: Nursing
RESPONSIBLE TO: Director of Nursing Services
AREA OF SUPERVISION: RN’s LPN's, CNA's, Helping Hands
MAIN FUNCTION: To assume responsibility of supervision of the Nursing Department during assigned shift.
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Graduate of a State-approved nursing school.
2. Currently licensed as a Registered Professional Nurse (RN) in New York State.
3. Minimum of one year nursing experience.
4. Leadership ability.
5. References indicating he/she is capable of handling the demands of the position.
6. Understands and will carry out the philosophy of St. Johnsville Rehab & Nursing Center.
7. Knowledge of medications, IV's and sterile techniques.
8. Adhere to all health and safety standards.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
- To function in the above-stated position, applicants must be able to meet the following basic criteria.
- Knowledge of therapy procedures, laws, regulations and guidelines that pertain to long term care.
- Able to speak and write English in an understandable manner.
- Able to see and hear adequately to meet the requirements of this position.
- Able to sit, stand, bend, lift, move and stretch intermittently during assigned shifts.
- Able to lift, push, pull or move a minimum of 100 lbs.
- Able to communicate with residents experiencing visual, speech, auditory, cognitive, physical or emotional impairments.
- Able to assist in evacuation of residents if necessary.
- Subject to exposure to bodily fluids, infectious wastes and communicable diseases.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Shows interest in upgrading his/her nursing educational background to promote optimal nursing care in the facility by attending inservices and/or outside seminars.
2. Prepares for possible expansion of role in nursing management.
3. Responsible for supervision of all nursing units.
4. Receives report from the out-going supervisor. Gives report to the oncoming supervisor if unit manage absent.
5. Makes rounds and completes resident assessments on all nursing units after receiving report and prior to giving report if unit manager absent.
6. Documents any facility problems or new information in communication book.
7. Attends all professional staff meetings as required.
8. Is knowledgeable of the job requirements of all his/her nursing subordinates.
9. Identifies learning needs of his/her subordinates and provides education based off the needs identified.
10. Notifies staff members of changes in policies and procedures and administrative memos.
11. As one of the highest ranking person in the facility he/she will act accordingly. He/she will notify the proper persons in any disruptions of operations according to procedures.
12. Meets with residents' families and friends, directing their concerns and problems to the proper departments and/or persons.
13. Audits residents' medical records on the nursing units for proper documentation, completion of orders, etc.
14. Performs employee evaluations for all LPN's on his/her shift and consults with the LPN's on CNA evaluations.
15. Supervises and assists the charge nurses with resident incidents, emergencies, transfers and admissions.
16. Investigates and deals with charge nurse problems. He/she will act as a resource person for them.
17. Reports to the charge nurse all problems or incidents with their employees. He/she is responsible for investigating and reprimanding employees.
18. Act as a liaison between other departments concerning resident problems.
19. Notifies the Director of Nursing Services of resident problems and departmental problems.
20. Supervises the resident dining room during meal per the monthly dining room schedule.
21. Checks in medications from pharmacy and takes to appropriate unit and person during COVID outbreaks if facility is closed.
22. Notifies Medical provider of change in resident status. Responsible for reviewing with medical provider any concerns about a resident.
23. Makes rounds with medical provider if the unit manager is unavailable.
24. Performs any other duties and responsibilities as assigned by Administration. (Example - Not limited to QA's, assisting with treatments, AIMS, care plans.)
25. On-call as designated, every other week, Monday-Sunday, with DON.
26. Completes care plans on assigned units and attends/participates in care conference, as needed.
27. Attends and participates in skin rounds for all units.
28. Initiates investigations into any resident incident (including A&I's, falls, or possible abuse).
29. Provides yearly in-services for all staff. Provides as needed in-services based on the need of the facility and department.
