CUSTODIAN/GROUNDS WORKER

General Summary

Performs a variety of housekeeping and custodial tasks in the cleaning of agency facilities. Cleans and mops floors and operates carpet cleaning equipment, wet/dry vac and other cleaning equipment. Washes windows, cleans restrooms, kitchens, community rooms, café’s, and other areas. Works in conjunction and communicates with Maintenance worker to order, stock, and maintain custodial supplies. Completes all grounds maintenance including mowing, weeding, planting, and trimming at the Rivers Enrichment Center and the Oaks Enrichment Center. Completes snow removal on all sidewalks at the Oaks Enrichment Center. Shares on call duties with Maintenance worker for afterhours emergencies. Fills in for Maintenance worker as needed.

Essential Functions

1. Empties wastebaskets and removes other debris from offices. Cleans baskets and changes liners. Removes trash from offices and empties paper recycling boxes.

2. Uses vacuum cleaners and carpet sweepers to clean carpeted surfaces. Performs spot cleaning of carpeted surfaces.

3. Dusts and polishes furniture, baseboards, file cabinets, window ledges, and other fixtures. Uses cleaning solution to remove marks from tables and other furniture. Removes all cobwebs.

4. Cleans and disinfects sinks, stools, and other fixtures. Cleans and polishes drinking fountains, mirrors, and chrome fixtures. Stocks restroom with towels, tissues, and soap.

5. Follows cleaning checklist for daily, weekly, monthly, and annual task assignments.

6. Cleans walls in offices, hallways, and restrooms.

7. Defrosts and cleans refrigerators, microwaves, coffee pots and other kitchen equipment.

8. Maintains and stocks the inventory of custodial supplies.

9. Assists in moving furniture and setting up for meetings and events.

10. Oversees community correction workers, jail trustees and other special program workers assigned to cleaning tasks.

11. Uses snow blower and shovel to remove snow from walks and steps. Spreads salt on icy surfaces. Performs grounds maintenance tasks such as trimming and weeding.

12. Assists with cleaning and maintenance of medical equipment and may assist in arranging for rentals.

13. Cleans agency vehicles.

14. Performs other general repairs to agency buildings, fixtures and equipment including furniture and medical devices.

15. Performs minor upkeep/repairs to cleaning equipment and lawn care equipment.

Other Functions

1. As directed by the Executive Director.

An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the above tasks. (These examples do not include all of the tasks which the employees may be expected to perform.)

Employment Qualifications

Education: Math skills necessary to measure chemicals and cleaning solutions and reading skills necessary to read instructions, safety materials and government regulations.

Experience: Experience in the cleaning, grounds keeping, and minor repair of building, mechanical systems, lawn care equipment, and snow removal equipment.

Other Requirements: Possession of a valid Michigan driver’s license.

Ability to lift 50 pounds or more.

Ability to climb stairs and ladders in performing duties.

Ability to lift and move supplies, furniture, boxes, and other items while setting up for events, stocking supplies and performing other tasks.

Ability to operate a snow blower, lawn mower and other grounds equipment.

Ability to operate various power tools.

Ability to use various cleaning agents or tools in the process of completing custodial tasks.

Working Conditions:

Works in cramped body positions to perform assigned duties.

Exposure to various chemical cleaning products.

Exposure to equipment where risk exists of getting burned, bruised or scraped.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $16.07 - $20.91 per hour
