POSITION SUMMARY :

The Director of Center for Learning is responsible for planning, developing, implementing, directing, evaluating, and standardizing structures, programs, and processes that support nursing education. This includes oversight and coordination of licensed and unlicensed nursing orientation, nursing residency program, staff development, competency assessment and validation, student programs and student nurse clinical rotation placements. The Director leads the development and implementation of innovations and action plans to improve nursing education and advance nursing practice at the department and facility levels. The Director champions best practice and evidence-based initiatives and serves as a catalyst for change. As a member of the nursing leadership team, this Director supports professional nursing practice and empowers and supports nurses to continuously improve in the delivery of safe, effective, compassionate, and efficient nursing care in collaboration with all health care disciplines. This position is responsible for participating in the strategic planning for nursing services and the realization of nursing goals. The Director ensures compliance with standards established by professional nursing organizations, national, state, and local regulatory agencies, and institutional policies and procedures. The Director is accountable for supporting professional nursing practice that upholds high standards of integrity and ethical behavior. The Director mentors others, role models professionalism, and participation in activities such as nursing organizations, nursing research, the community, and bodies that shape health care policies and practices. The Director of Center for Learning identifies best practices for patient satisfaction and service excellence initiatives and programs. Ensures that monitoring of patient experience scores has actionable items that leaders can create goals for success.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES :

  • Service Consistently supports and communicates the Mission, Vision, and Values of St. Joseph Medical Center.
  • Upholds the Standards of Conduct and Corporate Compliance.
  • Participates as a productive member of the Nursing Services leadership team.
  • Serves as a change agent, assisting staff in understanding the importance, necessity, impact, and process of change.
  • People Collaborates with inter and intra-professional colleagues to ensure quality outcomes.
  • Promotes staff retention.
  • Effectively manages direct reports including establishing realistic, measurable goals.
  • Provides regular performance feedback based on individual goals and objectives.
  • Conducts objective employee evaluations.
  • Ensures personnel management is consistent with state and federal laws and facility policy and procedure.
  • Utilizes progressive disciplinary action process to address staff performance and behavior issues in a timely manner.
  • Reports practice and conduct issues to regulatory agencies and organizational entities as indicated.

Quality :

  • Completes annual education requirements.
  • Promotes a culture of patient safety which results in the identification and reduction of unsafe practices.
  • Identifies risks and hazards to patients through various risk assessments, with actions taken to mitigate patient harm.
  • Develops, implements, directs, and evaluates nursing orientation programs, nursing residency program, in-service education and staff development and the student clinical program.
  • Assesses, addresses, records and tracks staff competence.
  • Applies appropriate teaching and evaluation modalities. Effectively presents / delivers education material.
  • Maintains visibility and open communication within the facility.
  • Fosters relationships and communication with executive and nursing leadership, directors, managers, and staff that enable collaborative problem identification and resolution.
  • Fosters a proactive vs. reactive approach to problem identification and resolution.
  • Uses current literature and resources to identify and implement best practices.
  • Makes appropriate and timely decisions, considering patient safety and facility needs.
  • Actively participates on committees and task forces to meet facility and departmental goals.
  • Promotes and practices patient / family advocacy.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Enhances the patient experience by fostering a positive relationship with customers.
  • Collaborates with other healthcare workers and departments to promote continuity of services and improved outcomes.

  • Finance :

  • Promotes stewardship of hospital resources while ensuring quality patient care.
  • Effectively plans, prepares, and monitors the annual budget for areas of responsibility to achieve effective financial performance.
  • Uses data and other relevant information to explain variations in operational expenses.
  • Effectively plans, allocates, and monitors acquisition of supplies, services, equipment, and capital resources.
  • Effectively plans for the maintenance and replacement of essential equipment and contracted services.
  • Allocates personnel effectively and monitors and limits overtime and supplemental staff usage.
  • Establishes priorities and allocates resources based on current situation and needs.
  • REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS :

  • Licensed as a Registered Nurse accepted by Texas State Board of Nursing to engage in professional nursing
  • Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing.
  • National Certification as recognized by the American Nurses Credentialing Center within two years of appointment
  • Three or more years of practice experience in a healthcare setting
  • 3 years of education experience
  • Comprehensive knowledge of nursing procedures, processes, and acute care organizations
  • Technical, critical thinking and interpersonal skills relevant to area in order to effectively and work collaboratively with the leadership team, executive team, and staff.
  • Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support certification required
  • Other certification requirements as defined by the certification policy
  • Able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing
  • Adept using Microsoft Office, online applications
  • PREFERRED

  • Master's Degree in Nursing or related field
  • DNP / PhD
