Job Title : Chief Development Officer (CDO)

Leadership Partner : President & Chief Executive Officer (CEO)

Departments : Philanthropy and Marketing & Communications

Direct Reports : Director of Philanthropy, Director of Development Services, and Director of Marketing & Communications

What you'll do in your role :

This is an exciting opportunity for a visionary leader, compelling communicator, strategic advisor, and innovative thinker who gains energy from building and strengthening relationships across a large and diverse geographic area. The Chief Development Officer (CDO) is a dynamic, collaborative, and creative leader dedicated to fulfilling the St. Louis Area Foodbank's (SLAFB) vision of a nutritionally secure Missouri and Illinois.

As the Chief Development Officer (CDO), you will provide leadership and strategy to the St. Louis Area Foodbank's vibrant and talented Philanthropy and Marketing & Communications teams. In the role of CDO, you'll have an opportunity to lead all philanthropic activities including but not limited to major gifts, individual giving, planned giving, corporate relations, government and private foundation grants. You will report directly to the Foodbank's President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and serve as an integral member of the organization's Executive Leadership Team (ELT).

Duties and Responsibilities :

  • Serve as a lead on the organization's plans for its 50th Anniversary in 2025, including but not limited to : messaging, financial support, paid and earned media strategies, and events
  • Work closely with the President & CEO, COO, and other leaders in planning for an upcoming major capital campaign.
  • Design and implement long-term, broad-based philanthropic giving and marketing & communications strategies that maximize impact and longevity of the organization
  • Develop the case, build the strategy, and execute a comprehensive plan and compelling vision to expand the network of support for the Foodbank's mission
  • Manage a personal portfolio of major corporate and individual donors to raise over $1 million toward the annual budget
  • Prospect and procure new partnerships with corporations and individuals as donors
  • Broaden the organizational marketing and communications plan to increase visibility, volunteers, engagement, and outcomes for our strategic plan
  • Create innovative marketing and communications initiatives to support engagement of a diverse group of potential supporters to the Foodbank ages 5 -
  • Oversee State Tax Credits program and processing gifts of appreciated securities to aid in positive relationships with major gift donors
  • Partner with the Chief Financial Officer to champion cross functional / departmental communication and transparency regarding monthly reconciliation and accountability efforts for all financial reporting, ensuring accuracy of all data
  • Oversee the Planned Giving and Endowment Programs, cultivating and creating long term revenue streams for long term financial growth and stability
  • Provide coaching and mentoring to develop the next generation of leaders in the

Philanthropy and Marketing & Communications departments

  • Attend meetings with the Foodbank's Board of Directors
  • Serve as the staff lead for the Board's Development Committee

    So, what do you need to be successful in this role? We seek a Chief-level executive with an exemplary history of leading, a high degree of professional and personal integrity, exceptional people management and team building skills, strong emotional intelligence, and a deep knowledge of all aspects of Philanthropy and Marketing & Communication.

    Qualifications :

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university required (master's degree preferred) with emphasis in marketing and communications, business, or nonprofit administration
  • 15 years of experience in non-profit fundraising, with 5 years of major donor fundraising and proven results for generating new revenue streams
  • 10 years of experience in marketing and communications with proven leadership in designing and leading strategy and campaigns to appeal to diverse audiences
  • Visionary leader who can develop team members to assume positions of increased responsibility with an evolving and growing non-profit organization while creating a great team-oriented People First organizational culture
  • Active affiliations with appropriate fundraising networks and organizations
  • Experience with and detailed knowledge of Customer Relationship Management (CRM) platforms; Blackbaud / Raiser's Edge NXT experience strongly preferred
  • Work Schedule :

  • Monday - Friday onsite at the SLAFB facility and in the community as needed
  • However, flexibility will be granted as appropriate in accordance with the Foodbank's Remote Work Policy
  • Special events and other projects related to this position may require occasional weekend and / or evening hours and work
  • Meeting attendance may require overnight travel

  • The St. Louis Area Foodbank supports 26 counties - 14 in Missouri and 12 in Illinois - thus serves, supports and stewards a diverse group of stakeholders across our region, as well as serves as a member of Feeding Missouri (the 6 Feeding America Food Banks in Missouri) and Feeding Illinois (the 7 Feeding America Food Banks in Illinois)
  • As a food bank, we collect food from a variety of sources, such as manufacturers, retail stores, farmers, and individual donors
  • We then store, sort, and repackage that food at the highest safety standards and finally distribute that food to our network of agencies and programs, which work directly with people in the community
  • We facilitate the movement of food safely and efficiently and offer the kinds of resources and support to our partner agencies that a single food pantry or shelter could not hope to access on its own
