Role Summary:
The Counsel will assist the Chief Legal Officer on all legal affairs and have primary responsibility to ensure adherence to league and regulatory standards and manage compliance programs within the club. This role involves drafting and reviewing contracts, providing legal counsel to various departments, adopting best practice corporate governance and implementing policies to mitigate legal and financial risks. It will interact with all departments.
Key Responsibilities –
Assist and Support Chief Legal Officer With:
- Contract Management: Draft, review, and negotiate contracts to protect the club's interests, supporting all departments in the Club. Other parties include coaches/agents, other clubs, league bodies, employees, sponsors, vendors/contractors and more.
- Immigration: Support the Club in its immigration needs, with a particular focus on players and sporting staff, in collaboration with external counsel. Advise on strategies and approach, deliver fast issue resolution, ensure compliance.
- Risk Management: Identify potential legal and compliance risks and develop strategies to mitigate them.
- Policy Development: Develop and implement internal policies to promote compliance and ethical standards across all departments.
- Dispute Resolution: Manage and resolve legal disputes, including litigation and arbitration, in collaboration with external counsel when necessary.
- Training and Education: Conduct training sessions for staff on legal and compliance matters to foster a culture of integrity and compliance.
Maintain Primary Responsibility for Regulatory & League Compliance: Ensure the Club's operations comply with league regulations and relevant laws, including player transactions (and Transfer Management System operation), Collective Bargaining Agreement, Sporting Competition rules, licenses and certifications, training requirements, Academy rules, commercial guidelines and more, in close collaboration with Sporting and other departments. Coordinate regularly and closely with Chief Financial Officer on Roster & Budget Guidelines. Engage with league and other club Legal peers to share best practices.
Qualifications:
- Background: Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited and highly respected law school and be a member in good standing of the Missouri bar
- Experience: Minimum of 5 years of legal experience; experience in sports law preferred.
- Ethical Judgment: Highest ethical standards and the ability to handle confidential information with maximum discretion.
- Analytical Skills: Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities with attention to detail.
- Communication Skills: Strong verbal and written communication skills, capable of conveying complex legal concepts to non-legal staff.
- Adaptability: Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple priorities effectively.
- Leadership Abilities: Proven leadership and management skills
