This position is part of the Civil Service Basic Union Contract represented by Council 5 of AFSCME.An employee in this class assists in performing a variety of installation and repair work required to maintain the mechanical, electrical and structural components of County facilities. Duties include assisting in maintaining plumbing, heating and ventilation systems and fixtures; and preventive maintenance and repair. The work is performed under the direction of assigned supervisory staff.These work environment factors are general in nature and may vary depending on the specific position being filled. Possession of appropriate level operating engineer’s license as determined by the psi and horsepower ratings of the boiler(s) in assigned County facility in which the vacancy exists.
Note: At the discretion of the hiring authority, the successful candidate may be considered for appointment at the Building Maintenance Worker level, contingent on minimum qualifications and department need. This would be determined at the time a job offer is extended.

NOTE: Upon completion of two consecutive, full-time years of service as a Building Maintenance Helper; a satisfactory performance rating in the most recent rating period; recommendation of the department head; and successful completion of a performance qualifying exam, the employee shall be authorized promotion to the Building Maintenance Worker classification.
BUILDING MAINTENANCE WORKER MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (Pass/Fail):
- Four (4) years full-time paid verifiable experience in the maintenance and repair of multi-unit, commercial/industrial or institutional buildings, including building management systems.
- Possession of a valid driver’s license.
