The St. Louis County Safety & Risk Management department is looking for an enthusiastic and detail-oriented individual to join their team as an Insurance & Claims Specialist in Duluth, MN. St. Louis County is a mobile work friendly employer.

Responsible professional work investigating and responding to property, auto, or general liability claims. 

The salary range reflected above is the normal hiring range for 2025. 

The full salary range for an Insurance & Claims Specialist, including longevity pay, is $30.01 - $42.53 per hour.
The full salary range for an Insurance & Claims Specialist Senior, including longevity pay, is $33.43 - $47.63 per hour.

This position is part of the Civil Service Basic Unit Employees Collective Bargaining Agreement represented by Council 5 of AFSCME.

An employee in this class is responsible for investigating and processing property, auto, or general liability claims.  Duties include investigating and processing claims, preparing and maintaining records and reports, preparing documentation for legal proceedings for property, auto, or general liability claims.  The work is performed under the direction of assigned supervisory staff.

Insurance and Claims Specialist -Property, Auto and General Liability:

These work environment factors are general in nature and may vary depending on the specific position being filled.  FREQUENT: Lift-Push/Pull while stationary up to 10 lbs; Carry-Push/Pull while moving about up to 10 lbs; Balance; Bend Neck; Maintain Posture; Move About; Reach; Sit; Stand; Talk/Speak; Walk; Wrist Turn (right); Wrist turn (left); Hearing (close proximity 0-5 ft); Hearing (distance up to 20 ft); Vision (Near, Midrange, Far, Depth Perception and Field of Vision); Works alone; Works with/around others; Customer/Public contact; Inside; Outside; and Drive.  OCCASIONAL: Carry-Push/Pull while moving about 10-20 lbs; Climb Stairs; Handle; Kneel; Rotate Neck; Static Neck Position; Squat; and Stoop/Bend.  RARE: Climb Ladders; Crouch; Crawl; Feel; Finger; Grasp; Reach Above Shoulder; Recline; Twist (waist); and Clients with Behavioral Challenges.

 


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - Insurance & Claims Specialist (Pass/Fail):
  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in business administration, risk management, safety, or a related field; AND one (1) year full-time paid professional verifiable experience in a risk management, loss control, insurance, claims investigation/processing, workers’ compensation claims adjusting/processing or closely related work; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as determined by the Director of Human Resources and Administration.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - Insurance & Claims Specialist Senior (Pass/Fail):
  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in business administration, risk management, safety or a related field AND two (2) years full-time paid professional verifiable experience in a risk management, loss control, insurance, claims investigation/processing, workers’ compensation claims adjusting/processing or closely related work; OR graduation from an accredited college or university with a Master’s degree in risk management, business administration, or a closely related field AND one (1) year full-time paid professional experience in a risk management, loss control, insurance, claims investigation/processing, workers’ compensation claims adjusting/processing or closely related work.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license.

Note: At the discretion of the hiring authority, the successful candidate may be considered for appointment at the Insurance & Claims Specialist Senior level, contingent on minimum qualifications and department need.  This would be determined at the time a job offer is extended.

RATING SYSTEM:
Supplemental Questions will be 100% of the scoring process:
Points will be awarded based on the applicants answers to supplemental questions 8-12.

Experience beyond ten years may be included on the application for purposes of meeting minimum qualifications or informing the hiring authority of your complete employment history.

PROBATIONARY PERIOD:
Appointees to the position must successfully complete at least a twelve month probationary period prior to being certified for permanent employment.
