Kind of Work

Public Health Educators work in the Community Health Unit as part of the Mental Health team to strategically implement mental health prevention and wellness work focused on northern St. Louis County, and in coordination with the southern St. Louis County counterpart. Additionally, this position will provide support in other subject areas of Community Health such as food access and the built environment. This position will be focused on partnering with community partners and organizations to help reduce stigma and improve awareness of mental health, crisis response, and suicide prevention. Other duties include assisting in identifying current trends effecting the health of northern St. Louis County communities, preparing public health data and information, promoting and conducting health education programs and services, and assisting in the local health assessment and planning process.

The salary range reflected above is the normal hiring range for 2025.

The full salary range for Public Health Educator I, including longevity pay, is $29.02 - $41.01 per hour.


The full salary range for Public Health Educator II, including longevity pay, is $31.08 - $44.20 per hour.

This position is part of the Civil Service Basic Unit Employees Collective Bargaining Agreement represented by Council 5 of AFSCME.

Distinguishing Features of Work

Public Health Educator I:
An employee in this class is responsible for assisting in the development, dissemination and evaluation of health education programs. Duties include assisting in identifying current trends affecting the health of a community, preparing public health data and information, promoting and conducting health education programs and services, and assisting in the local public health assessment and planning process. The work is performed under the direction of assigned supervisory staff.

Public Health Educator II:
An employee in this class is responsible for leading and performing the development, dissemination and evaluation of health education programs. Duties include identifying health trends, preparing health data and information and promoting and conducting health education programs and services; participating in the local public health assessment and planning process. The work is performed under the direction of assigned supervisory staff.

Work Environment

These work environment factors are general in nature and may vary depending on the specific position being filled. CONSTANT: Hear within 20 feet; talk/speak; and customer/public contact. FREQUENT: Lift and carry up to 10 pounds; near vision; climb stairs; grasp; maintain posture; move about; sit; stand; walk; work alone, with and around others; work inside; and drive. OCCASIONAL: Lift and carry up to 50 pounds; midrange and far vision; reach; reach above shoulder; squat; traffic; extended day and work outside.

Selection Process

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - Public Health Educator I - (Pass/Fail):

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in health education, public health, communications or a closely related field.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - Public Health Educator II - (Pass/Fail)
  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in health education, public health, communications or a closely related field AND two (2) years full-time paid verifiable professional experience in the assigned area of specialty; OR graduation from an accredited college or university with a Master’s degree in health education, public health, communications or a closely related field.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license.
Note: The successful candidates may be considered for appointment to the Public Health Educator I or II level, contingent on minimum qualifications and department need, at the discretion of the hiring authority. This will be determined at the time a job offer is extended.

RATING SYSTEMS:
Supplemental Questions will be 100% of the scoring process:
Points will be awarded based on the applicants answers to supplemental questions 6-10.

Applicants selected for appointment to a position with St. Louis County are subject to a background investigation.

PROBATIONARY PERIOD:
Appointees to the position must successfully complete at least a six-month probationary period prior to being certified for permanent employment.
