Environmental Technician (On Call) - Forestry

St. Louis County Department of Parks and Recreation is adding an Environmental Technician to join its Forestry Section. The primary focus of the Environmental Technician will be to assist the management of natural resources within the park system. Natural communities managed by the Department may include prairies, wetlands, savannas, and woodlands.


The starting salary will be $20.00 hourly and there are no benefits provided.

Examples of Duties

  • Assist the Forestry Manager as needed to develop, manage, maintain, and interpret natural areas in the park system. Develops resource management plans and implements conservation tasks.
  • Assist with the planting and re-construction of prairies, wetlands, savannas, and woodlands. Must have a thorough knowledge of site preparation, planting techniques, and management of all natural re-construction projects.
  • Control and or eradicate invasive plant species throughout the park system by means of herbicide use, cutting, pulling, and mowing.
  • Exercise safe and proper use of pesticides including storage, mixing, handling, applying, disposal, and hauling of chemicals.
  • Assist with prescribed burns.
  • Work with volunteer groups which may include weekend duties.
  • Work independently with minimal supervision or direction.
  • Ability to work with other land organizations, individuals, and volunteers to implement conservation best management practices.
  • Ability to write and oversee natural resource cost-share and grant projects throughout the Parks Department.
  • Perform such additional duties as may properly be required or assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor of Science Degree in Natural History, Environmental Science, Wildlife Conservation & Management, Natural Resource Management or related field.

Candidates must possess a valid Driver's License.

International Society of Arboriculture (I.S.A.) Certified Arborist and Tree Risk Assessment Qualification (ISA TRAQ) not required, but preferred.

Additional Information

SELECTION AND APPOINTMENT: A selection committee will evaluate the qualifications of each applicant which will include recentness and appropriateness of the applicant's education and experience, answers to the supplemental questions, results of employment references investigated and any other appropriate information available. The selection committee will admit to the interview only those persons who possess the most job related qualifications and may establish admittance criteria beyond the minimum qualifications stated above.

Responses provided to the interview questions listed under the Supplemental Question heading of this posting will comprise 100% of the applicant's earned grade. A candidate must earn a qualifying grade of 70 or more on the interview to be eligible for appointment. Once questions are scored, an email will be sent to the address on file with instructions on how to complete and submit a Conviction Questionnaire. Candidates have 3 days to complete the required questionnaire.

The five top ranking candidates, based on the final grade, will be certified to the Department Director/Appointing Authority who will make the final decision.

All applicants conditionally offered a merit position will be required to submit to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Screening will be performed by a reputable clinical laboratory. The cost of screening will be covered by the County.


Part-time employees receive pro-rated PTO (Paid Time Off) and holiday pay if they work 20 or more hours a week.
