There is one part-time position (34 hours/week) housed in a domestic violence shelter located in North County. The hours are Sunday-Thursday 10:00 A.M.-6:00 P.M. The individual will be responsible for general support services such as shelter, food, clothing and safety to clients in a shelter care program for abused women and their children. Will provide direct services in accordance with agency policies and procedures; provide crisis intervention support by phone and in person; provide general and legal advocacy services for clients; perform other related work as required. Individual will take responsibility for the quality and periodic evaluation of services for residents and their children.
The starting salary for this position is $20.00 hourly.
Preferred Experience:
Knowledge of women's issues and the dynamics of family violence and its effects on children. Must have at least 2 years' experience working in a domestic violence shelter. Good written and verbal communication skills. Ability to gain the confidence of and establish good relationships with the clients and their children. Commitment to make use of the empowerment/therapeutic model employed by the center in working with residents. Ability to work with a variety of clients often under stressful circumstances. Flexibility IS ESSENTIAL.
The shelter is open 24/7 and the individual may be required to work evenings, weekends and holidays. Must have the ability to prioritize tasks and work with other agencies to coordinate services for clients. Must have a valid driver's license, reliable transportation and be at least 21 years of age. SELECTION AND APPOINTMENT: A selection committee will evaluate the qualifications of each applicant which will include recentness and appropriateness of the applicant's education and experience, answers to the supplemental questions, results of employment references investigated and any other appropriate information available.
The selection committee will admit to the interview only those persons who possess the most job related qualifications and may establish admittance criteria beyond the minimum qualifications stated above. The interview will comprise 100% of the applicant's earned grade. A candidate must earn a qualifying grade of 70 or more on the interview to be eligible for appointment. After initial interviews with the selected candidates are conducted, an email will be sent to the address on file with instructions on how to complete and submit a Conviction Questionnaire. Candidates have 3 days to complete the required questionnaire.
The five top ranking candidates, based on the final grade, will be certified to the Department Director/Appointing Authority who will make the final decision.
All applicants conditionally offered a merit position will be required to submit to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Screening will be performed by a reputable clinical laboratory. The cost of screening will be covered by the County.

- Maintain client and shelter confidentiality
- Assist in maintaining a safe and clean agency environment
- Develop and facilitate support, education and therapeutic group sessions for children
- Prepare and compile written monthly reports for the management team, detailing the number of children attending groups and dates of attendance
- Evaluate crisis situations and screen clients for agency services
- Interview clients for agency services; study clients and children's needs by analysis of information; establish relationship in which client/child can express feelings and attitudes; clarify the situation and help client decide what options are available; make agency and community resources available
- Communicate with other agencies regarding services to meet the client's/children's needs
- Coordinate school enrollment for children in shelter and serve as liaison to the school administration
- Provide age-appropriate groups and activities for children
- Provide consistent and accurate referral services
- Provide advocacy to clients, e.g. legal, medical etc.
- Assist clients with Ex Parte/Orders Of Protection & other legal services as requested
- Participate in the Court Watch Program
- Provide emergency transportation, supplies and support services to clients on an as-needed basis
- Participate in staff meetings
- Collect and maintain accurate client information
- Evaluate the services being provided by the agency in relation to specified goals and standards; recommend modifications and new programs when appropriate
- Recommend and/or provide input on new programs
- Other duties as assigned.
