Incumbents in this position are responsible for performing upper-level management duties in the City of St. Louis Fire Division of the Department of Public Safety involving the administration and supervision of citywide fire suppression and prevention activities.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
Responds to multiple alarm fires, directs all firefighting operations, and makes decisions regarding need for additional equipment until the arrival of a superior officer; plans, assigns, and directs the inspection and enforcement work of the Fire Prevention Bureau; inspects buildings after fires are under control to determine origin or cause of fire, and for structural damage that would prohibit occupancy; arranges for fire watches and siphoning operations when needed; makes estimates of damage to buildings and contents; plans, schedules, supervises, and reviews the work of subordinates; reviews reports submitted for accuracy and completeness; makes periodic inspections of personnel, quarters, apparatus, tools, equipment, and records; prepares reports of conditions found and makes recommendations; supervises water flow hydrant tests and tests of hose, life nets, ropes, life belts, and breathing equipment; investigates accidents involving injury to personnel or damage of equipment or property and makes reports and recommendations; supervises and participates in giving lectures and demonstrations of fire prevention, protection, and extinguishment; checks requisitions for supplies and materials needed at fire stations; inspects uniforms and orders repair or replacement; assigns subordinates to special details of funerals, parades, and large crowd assemblies; participates in preparation of plans for division activities in event of local or national emergency; supervises training program for rescue and survival for civilian groups; reviews and reports on the work of fire companies at fire drills and at in-service training.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Comprehensive knowledge of firefighting and fire prevention methods; comprehensive knowledge of the operation and maintenance of modern firefighting equipment and apparatus; comprehensive knowledge of the rules and regulations of the department; considerable knowledge of the geography and street layout of the City; considerable knowledge of the City building code, especially as it applies to fire prevention, firefighting, and fire safety; considerable knowledge of modern management techniques and methods as they apply to the administration of firefighting and fire prevention activities.
Comprehensive skill in planning, laying out, and directing the work of a large number of subordinates under emergency conditions and in routine work; comprehensive skill in instructing others in fire prevention methods and techniques; comprehensive skill in commanding respect and maintaining discipline.
Two years of experience as a Battalion Fire Chief with the City of St. Louis Fire Division of the Department of Public Safety by the last date for filing application.
License: Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license while employed by the City of St. Louis. Please note type of license, number, class, and expiration date on the Employment Application. Must be able to present license at the time of the Management Simulation.

City Residence Preference Points
