What are the responsibilities and job description for the Wildlife Veterinarian position at St. Louis Zoo?
Description: The Saint Louis Zoo is seeking a qualified applicant for the position of Temporary Part-Time (up to 32 hours / week) Wildlife Veterinarian. The position is with the Institute for Conservation Medicine (ICM) and will report directly to the Director of the ICM. The successful applicant will be a member of a team that includes three veterinarians (one an ACZM Diplomate), one technician, one research associate, an education liaison, and a program manager.
Responsibilities: The veterinarian will assist with all ICM Missouri based conservation medicine projects, including microbiome and ranavirus studies of box turtles, a canid conservation initiative, and One Health outreach for K-12 to college age groups. The veterinarian may also participate in one of the ICM’s international field projects in the Galapagos Islands, Kenya, South Africa or Madagascar. The veterinarian will have the opportunity to publish in the field of One Health and be the PI of a proposal seeking additional funds to potentially extend the position beyond the temporary 2022 status. Duties will include, but are not limited to, carnivore trapping, anesthesia, and sample collection, box turtle tracking and sample collection, laboratory diagnostic work that may include molecular diagnostics, data analyses and manuscript/proposal writing.
Qualifications: Candidate must have a Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine (or equivalent) and be able to practice veterinary medicine in the United States. The individual must demonstrate excellence in field conservation medicine decision making skills, knowledge and experience in wildlife medicine and One Health, and have strong communication skills. Candidates must be able to work both independently and collaboratively, and be able to work under a variety of field conditions. The successful applicant must demonstrate a service mentality, a positive attitude, thrive in a collaborative team dynamic, and align with the Saint Louis Zoo’s values and mission. The successful candidate will be required to submit to a criminal background check and drug test, and must be fully vaccinated against COVID 19.
