St. Luke's Sexton (Custodian) Job Description
12 hours per week At least 3 hours should be worked Sundays 10am-1pm. Remaining hours will be negotiated with the Rector.
$15-$17 per hour
Reporting to the Rector, Vestry and other staff, the Custodian (in the Episcopal Church, this position is called the “Sexton”) is responsible for the appearance and well-being of the church property, which includes the church, parish hall, general gathering spaces, and grounds. The Sexton also helps to set-up for special events and special liturgies.
The sexton serves to maintain a high standard of cleanliness and readiness of Church facilities to enable the work and ministry of the congregation and to create a pleasant atmosphere for members, guests, and staff. This includes deep cleaning of kitchen, restrooms, church, general gathering space(s), as well as basic household chores and changing out supplies as needed.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Maintenance and Cleaning
- Open and close buildings on days appointed by the Rector
- Inspect and clean sanctuary once a week unless otherwise told by the Rector and Wardens.
- Inspect and clean kitchen and restrooms weekly.
- This includes, but is not limited to, such duties as sweeping, dusting, washing windows and mirrors, minor repairs, changing light bulbs, floor and toilet cleaning and related functions. This is the primary responsibility of the sexton’s position.
- Empty trash and recycling receptacles weekly and as needed.
- Keep restrooms and kitchen stocked with paper products and other staple supplies.
- Submit purchase request of supplies when needed. All requests shall be submitted to the Parish Administrator.
- Perform minor repairs. Update Rector and Wardens on status of needed repairs and maintenance.
- Maintain basic toolkit
Security
- See that safety devices such as fire extinguishers, smoke detectors, and emergency lights are inspected as required. Maintains a log of inspection dates.
Grounds Keeping
- General clean-up and maintenance of walkways, memorial garden, parking area, entrances.
- Shovel and salt sidewalks when it snows. You will be paid an additional $75 for snow removal when needed.
Event Set-up/Break-down
- Set up furnishings and supplies as needed for parish events such as community meals and classes.
- Clean up the Sunday coffee hour including filling and starting the dishwasher.
- Keep kitchen clean and organized.
- Break down set-ups after the events conclude, storing away furnishings and supplies.
- Provide needed services related to weddings, memorials, and funerals for which the sexton is compensated directly (see detailed description following)
Wedding Responsibilities (Sexton fee paid by bride and groom)
- Ensure church is clean.
- Clean bathrooms before and after wedding ceremony.
- Clean church for Sunday services after wedding ceremony.
- Be present during the wedding and reception (if held at St. Luke’s) in case of emergency, spills, etc.
Funeral Responsibilities (Sexton fee paid directly by family of the deceased)
- Ensure Church is clean.
- Clean bathrooms before and after funeral ceremony.
- Clean church for next service.
- Clean the parish hall following reception
Other
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Attend special staff meetings.
- Provide special event coverage on a per-event basis.
- Participate in periodic performance reviews by the Rector, with regular goal-setting.
Working Schedule and Self Care
This is a part-time flexible position of 10-12 hours/week.
Working hours will be arranged with the Rector or Junior Warden to accommodate responsibilities without the need to exceed 12 hours per week on any regular basis. At least three of the hours should be on Sundays from 10am-1pm. The remaining hours may be negotiated with the Rector.
Physical Qualifications and Skills Required
The position involves work in a wide range of conditions that can be physically demanding. The Sexton must be able to:
- Climb, crawl, stoop and kneel
- Flexibility and dependability
- Tolerate exposure to heat and cold and inclement weather
- Operate and properly maintain power tools and other equipment.
- Be able to lift, push, pull and move equipment, supplies, etc. up to 50 pounds and transport up to 150 pounds with mechanical assistance
- Fully vaccinated against Covid-19 including booster if eligible
Personal Qualities Required
- Strong relational skills, service orientation, and a positive personal chemistry.
- Comfortable working with of a wide range of people including volunteers from the parish.
- Although St. Luke’s is a religious organization, employee’s religious affiliation is immaterial. However, sensitivity to the identity and mission of the St. Luke’s and the Episcopal Church is necessary for effectiveness in this role.
- Absolute dependability, ability to communicate clearly, and honesty required.
- Be able to communicate in both oral and written form; read, understand, and follow instructions, and schedules.
- Be able to work independently, with limited day-to-day guidance or monitoring.
