The Mobile Phlebotomist is responsible for drawing patients' blood at locations other than a Patient Service Center or hospital.
JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :
Interprets verbal and written physician orders
Obtains blood specimens from patients using appropriate blood collection equipment (needles, lancets, etc.) and follows safe practices according to the Laboratory Specimen Collection Manual and Phlebotomy Procedure Manual in a timely manner
Work respectfully with the mobile scheduler, making sure proper communication is relayed daily. Keep patients informed of any delays
Responsible for handling and processing laboratory specimens according to Accession Procedure Manual including operation of a centrifuge and proper specimen transfer and storage
Demonstrate efficient time utilization in the patient home, at home base, and in preparation for and travel to and from the visit
Perform skills independently according to department procedures. Researches and / or obtains needed information prior to the patient visit
Assume personal responsibility to keep informed of current communications and trends within the department
Maintains confidentiality of all materials handled within SLUHN Entity as well as the proper release of information
Personally and proactively review for understanding and comply with all Network and departmental policies and procedures
PHYSICAL AND SENSORY REQUIREMENTS :
Ability to operate a motor vehicle to travel to any location within the St. Luke’s University Health Network service area to collect specimens. Employee must have the ability to sit for up to two hours at a time. Manual dexterity is required to perform the essential functions of a phlebotomist. In a typical workday, the manual dexterity and ability to use fingers / hands for repetitive action would include palpating veins, rare grasping and occasional twisting / turning. The phlebotomist must have the ability to use upper extremities for occasional lifting and frequent carrying of objects weighing up to twenty pounds as well as the ability to frequently stoop / bend. Additional physical requirements would include stabilizing and holding uncooperative outpatients. Must be able to read, write, and speak fluent English. Sensory requirements include the ability for touching, hearing normal conversation, and seeing with general vision.
EDUCATION :
High School graduate or equivalent required. Associates degree preferred. Graduate from an accredited phlebotomy school with a minimum of 100 successful draws.
TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE :
Two years phlebotomy experience required. Three to five years of phlebotomy experience preferred. Basic computers skill required. Requires independent judgment in the performance of the assigned duties. Strong customer service focus. Bi-lingual English / Spanish or Arabic preferred. Must have valid driver’s license, proof of valid car insurance, and personal and reliable transportation.
