The Phlebotomist obtains blood specimens from patients using appropriate blood collection equipment (needles, lancets, etc.) according to Laboratory Specimen Collection Manual and Phlebotomy Procedure Manual. Performs EKG testing on outpatients. Must be able to commute to any of the outpatient specimen collection centers to provide phlebotomy coverage as needed (outpatients in the hospital outpatient area and all outside draw stations, nursing homes, senior centers, health screens, etc.). Requires independent judgment in the performance of the assigned duties. Responsible for handling and processing laboratory specimens according to Accession Procedure Manual. Performs equipment maintenance, computer entry, and communicates with hospital staff, physician offices.
JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Interprets verbal and written physician orders.
  • Obtains blood specimens from patients using appropriate blood collection equipment (needles, lancets, etc.) and follows safe practices according to the Laboratory Specimen Collection Manual and Phlebotomy Procedure Manual in a timely manner.
  • Identifies patients by having patient repeat their name and birth date and comparing the information to physician request and labels (or registration form).
  • Label specimens accurately.
  • Responsible for handling and processing laboratory specimens according to Accession Procedure Manual including operation of a centrifuge and proper specimen transfer and storage.
  • Performs equipment maintenance, computer entry, and communicates with hospital staff, physician offices.
  • Follow correct specimen packing for transport of specimens through the pneumatic tube system or transport by courier.
  • Requires independent judgment in the performance of the assigned duties.
  • Handle stats appropriately. Forward all necessary information to the lab.
  • Provides phlebotomy coverage at varying workstations and when necessary, transports specimens back to the laboratory (outpatients in the hospital outpatient area and all outside draw stations, nursing homes, senior centers, health screens, etc.).
  • Train and orient new employees (including non-laboratory staff that requires phlebotomy as a function of their job) in phlebotomy and specimen processing procedures.
  • Teach and mentor student externs from affiliated health career programs.
  • Performs EKG’s as necessary.
  • Complies with procedures for the collection of chain of custody specimens (i.e. urine drug screens and paternity tests).
PHYSICAL AND SENSORY REQUIREMENTS:
Ability and a valid driver’s license to operate a motor vehicle in order to collect specimens at off-site locations. In order to satisfy the physical requirements in a typical workday, when performing essential functions employee must have the ability to sit for 0-2 hours. Manual dexterity is required in order to perform the essential functions of a phlebotomist. In a typical workday, the manual dexterity and ability to use fingers/hands for repetitive action would include frequent fingering, continuous handling, palpating veins, rare grasping and occasional twisting/turning. In a typical workday, when performing essential functions, the phlebotomist must have the ability to use upper extremities for occasional lifting and frequent carrying of objects weighing up to ten pounds. In order to perform the essential functions, a phlebotomist must have ability to frequently stoop/bend in a typical workday. Additional physical requirements of the essential functions would include restraining and holding uncooperative patients. Must be able to read and write English in order to perform the essential functions. Sensory requirements necessary to perform essential functions in a typical workday include the ability for touching, hearing normal conversation, and seeing with general vision.
EDUCATION:
High School graduate or equivalent.
TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
Phlebotomy experience/1 year required or have completed 100 hour externship with exceptional performance (observed by Phlebotomy Supervisor and Lead Phlebotomist). Valid driver’s license required.
