St. Mark’s Episcopal School’s Art & Yearbook Teacher is responsible for inspiring and nurturing the artistic development of our students in middle school. As a member of the Fine Arts team, the Art & Yearbook Teacher has a strong understanding of child development, a love for art in various forms, and the ability to create a dynamic and engaging learning environment where students can explore their creativity, build foundational art skills, and develop an appreciation for the visual arts. As the faculty member in charge of the annual yearbook, the ability to guide and motivate middle school students in all aspects of yearbook development is essential.
Art Duties:
- Develop and implement a developmentally appropriate and engaging art curriculum that aligns with school-wide objectives and fosters creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
- Plan and deliver dynamic and hands-on art lessons that introduce students to a variety of art media, techniques (e.g., drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, collage), and art concepts (e.g., color theory, line, shape, texture, form).
- Adapt teaching methods and materials to meet the diverse learning needs and abilities of all students.
- Integrate art with other subject areas where appropriate to enhance learning and make connections across the curriculum.
- Introduce students to a diverse range of artists, art history, and cultural perspectives.
- Establish and maintain a positive, safe, and stimulating learning environment that encourages exploration, experimentation, and respect for materials and others' work.
- Organize and maintain art supplies and equipment, ensuring their proper use and storage.
- Create visually appealing displays of student artwork to celebrate their achievements and enhance the classroom environment.
- Assess student learning through observation, participation, projects, and other appropriate methods.
- Provide timely and constructive feedback to students and parents on their artistic progress and development and maintain accurate records of student progress.
Yearbook Duties:
- Develop and implement a comprehensive yearbook curriculum that covers topics such as journalistic writing (captions, articles), photography (composition, lighting), graphic design (layout, typography), and teamwork.
- Introduce and guide students in using yearbook software and design tools.
- Oversee all aspects of the yearbook production process, ensuring deadlines are met and the final product is of high quality.
- Guide students in developing the yearbook theme, sections, page layouts, and overall design.
- Manage student assignments for writing, photography, design, and editing.
- Coordinate photo assignments, ensuring comprehensive coverage of school events, activities, and student life.
- Work collaboratively with students on layout design, proofreading, and revisions.
- Manage the yearbook budget and work with vendors (e.g., yearbook printing company).
- Foster a collaborative and positive team environment among yearbook staff members.
- Manage equipment and supplies related to yearbook production (e.g., cameras, computers, software).
- Serve as the primary point of contact for all yearbook-related inquiries from students, parents, and faculty.
- Communicate regularly with the Head of Middle School and other relevant school personnel regarding yearbook progress and any potential issues.
General Duties:
- Participate in school meetings, professional development opportunities, and other school-related activities.
- Participate in duties such as arrival, dismissal, lunch and recess.
- Lead a middle school advisory group
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Head of School.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Art Education or a related field.
- Experience teaching art to middle school students.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and implement engaging and differentiated art curriculum.
- Passion for art and working with children.
- Experience advising or teaching yearbook production at the middle school or high school level.
- Strong knowledge of journalistic principles, photography techniques, and graphic design concepts.
- Proficiency in using yearbook software and design tools.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to manage budgets and work with external vendors.
- Experience with digital photography and photo editing.
