What are the responsibilities and job description for the Primary School Teaching Assistant position at St. Mark’s Episcopal School?
The Primary School Teaching Assistant will work closely with the Lead Teacher to implement developmentally appropriate curriculum and activities for our primary school students. This role requires a patient, energetic, and creative individual who enjoys collaborating with a team and building positive relationships with children and their families.
Duties:
- Assist the Lead Teacher in planning and implementing daily activities, including circle time, arts and crafts, music, movement, and outdoor play.
- Provide individual and small group support to children, helping them to develop their social, emotional, cognitive, and physical skills.
- Able to implement curriculum and activities effectively.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe classroom environment.
- Supervise children during all activities, ensuring their safety and well-being.
- Assist with classroom tasks, such as preparing materials, general clerical tasks, cleaning up, and organizing supplies.
- Assist with classroom management, including transitions, routines, and behavior guidance.
- Communicate effectively with the Lead Teacher regarding children's progress, needs, and any concerns.
- Build positive relationships with children and their families, fostering open communication and collaboration.
- Maintain professional development in areas of best practices and current research appropriate for Primary school students.
- Demonstrate knowledge of child development principles and age-appropriate activities.
- Practice patience, enthusiasm, and a genuine love for working with young children.
- Attend and participate in faculty meetings, school sponsored events and celebrations.
- Technology competency in Google Suite is preferred.
- Other duties as assigned by the Head of Primary School.
Physical Requirements and Work Environment
- Works in a sometimes highly stressful environment dealing with a wide variety of challenges
- Ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time
- Physical agility to lift up to 50 pounds; to bend, stoop, and reach overhead
- Work primarily in a traditional climate controlled classroom environment
- Work intermittently in outside weather conditions, including extreme heat and cold
