St. Mark’s School of Texas seeks a dynamic and innovative educator to teach engineering and science courses in the Middle and/or Upper School. The holder of this position will collaborate with the Makerspace Director to deliver STEM instruction in the state-of-the-art engineering wing of the new Winn Science Center. Additionally, responsibilities will include teaching classes in a science discipline related to the person’s field of expertise. Outside of the classroom, teachers at St. Mark’s contribute in other areas such as clubs, athletics, the wilderness program, etc. Interested candidates should have a bachelor’s degree or higher in a science field and have taught these subjects at the middle or secondary level.

St. Mark’s students are eager and motivated learners, and the science and engineering courses are based upon frequent and challenging learning experiences that promote student collaboration and communication. A strong candidate should be a content expert who teaches with an engaging classroom style, collaborates with colleagues to develop innovative lessons and projects, and appeals to the learning styles of a diverse and extremely talented group of boys. Beyond the classroom, faculty at St. Mark’s participate in a variety of activities that include serving as an Advisor to a small group of students, coaching a sport, sponsoring a club, or participating in the Wilderness Program, depending on experience. Finally, St. Mark’s School of Texas is committed to character and leadership education, and prospective faculty members should share a commitment to developing these qualities in young men.

Responsibilities

  • Science Teacher
    • Teach up to two sections of science in the Middle or Upper School, depending on experience and staffing needs
    • Serve as an Advisor to a small group of boys
    • Contribute to school programs by participating in the wilderness program, club program, or athletic program, depending on experience
    • Participate in the character and leadership education program
  • Engineering Teacher
    • Teach multiple sections of engineering or robotics in the Middle and/or Upper School
    • Support the Makerspace Director in delivering the engineering curriculum and managing the many extracurricular activities, events, and special projects conducted in the makerspace and fabrication lab
    • Sponsor extracurricular activities such as the Upper School Robotics Teams, Rocketry Club, Middle School Lego Robotics, NASA Hunch program, etc.
    • Maintain and upgrade equipment in the makerspace and fabrication lab
Experience / Qualifications & Skills

  • A bachelor’s degree or higher in engineering, science, or a related subject
  • Five or more years teaching engineering or science at the upper or middle school level; independent school experience is a pl Relevant professional experience in industry may supplement or replace this qualification.
  • Fluency with the breadth of technology involved in engineering activity, which includes experience with
    • computer-aided design
    • automated manufacturing tools such as CNC routers, laser cutters, 3D printers, etc.
    • integrated engineering projects using Arduino, Raspberry Pi, or similar microcontrollers
    • programming for Arduino or similar microcontrollers
    • mills, lathes, welders, and the variety of hand and power tools found in a shop/ makerspace
  • Ability to make innovative contributions to the STEM programs and eagerness to stay current with new developments in engineering fields
  • Strong computational thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Passion for subject matter and for working with young people
  • Enthusiastic and collaborative approach to working with colleagues
