St. Mary’s Catholic Center seeks a highly motivated individual who enjoys people, is mission-driven, and possesses the skills and experience necessary to support the ministry through the care of its facilities. This role offers the opportunity to enhance skills in building systems and facilities management while contributing to the development of efficient maintenance practices within St. Mary’s. The Maintenance Specialist reports directly to the Director of Facilities.

St. Mary’s Catholic Center at Texas A&M University has the mission to form apostles for the Church and the world. We are a ministry of the New Evangelization who believe in exercising a dynamic orthodoxy, faithful to the Church’s instruction, engaging and fervent, in a manner that reaches the hearts of the faithful and the unchurched. The Maintenance Specialist is a member of the operations team at St. Mary’s Catholic Center.

Requirements:

The Maintenance Specialist assists in the stewardship of the physical facilities of the center and helps maintain the smooth-running operation of all parish buildings, grounds, and facilities. This includes ensuring a safe, secure, and welcoming environment for parishioners, students, staff, and visitors. The maintenance specialist interacts with staff members and others on a regular basis and we value a strong commitment to customer service and meeting the needs of all users of the center.

Specific duties include but are not limited to:

  • Promote a positive and collaborative work environment.
  • Perform routine inspections and maintenance on all St. Mary’s facilities, including HVAC, electrical, plumbing (MEP), lighting, and other essential systems.
  • Troubleshoot and repair a variety of building issues, from minor fixes (painting, drywall, simple repairs) to more complex maintenance needs.
  • Follow all safety guidelines and maintain a safe and organized work environment.
  • Assist with performing preventative maintenance on equipment throughout the campus to help reduce breakdowns and downtime.
  • Maintain logs of maintenance tasks, repairs, and inspections to ensure organized records and help schedule preventative maintenance tasks.
  • Assist in managing inventory and supplies, coordinating orders as necessary, and liaise with external vendors when specialized services are required.
  • Other duties and maintenance tasks as assigned.

Ministerial Character

The Pastor is the visible principle and foundation of unity in the parish of St. Mary's Catholic Center which the Bishop has entrusted to him. He makes Christ’s mission present and enduring in the parish. In order to fulfill his mission, the Pastor employs suitable, chosen collaborators (clerics, religious, or lay people). He shares with them his mission and entrusts various responsibilities to them.

Positions employed at St. Mary's Catholic Center help to extend the ministry of the Pastor in particular ways as outlined in the job description. Therefore, the employee in this position is closely connected to and assists the Pastor in the performance of his ministry and thereby engages in ministry for the Church.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • To be a successful staff member at St. Mary’s the candidate will possess a servant’s heart and demonstrate the ability to initiate and maintain positive working relationships with a broad spectrum of people (outside contractors/vendors, clergy, pastoral staff, students, volunteers etc.).
  • Excellent verbal, visual, and written communication skills.
  • A self-directed, goal-oriented, well-organized, and creative approach, with strong attention to detail and the ability to think systematically.
  • Knowledge of basic building systems (HVAC and BAS, electrical, plumbing), along with experience in commercial HVAC, mechanical systems, and general repairs.
  • Knowledge of and experience with maintenance procedures and safety regulations.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills.
  • Experience working in a team setting, as well as leading and managing others.
  • A demonstrated ability to learn new skills and solve problems independently is highly desired. The duties and responsibilities of this position vary day to day and being adaptable and comfortable with change is essential.
  • Preference will be given to candidates who are practicing Catholics.
  • Any candidate must be able to support the mission of St. Mary’s Catholic Center and its role as a Catholic institution.

EDUCATION

  • High school diploma required with preference given to those with degrees or certifications in a related field such as construction, engineering, facility maintenance, etc.
  • Relevant experience may substitute for education.

EXPERIENCE

  • At least 2 years experience in commercial facilities maintenance and/or construction industries.
  • Working within the Catholic Community.

LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS

  • Valid driver's license.
  • Must maintain compliance with the Diocese of Austin Ethics and Integrity in Ministry (EIM) policies through the employment period.

COMPENSATION

  • The Maintenance Specialist is a full time, salaried position. Compensation is commensurate with qualifications and experience and includes full benefits.

JOB CONDITION AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Work is performed in a church or office setting with daily and weekly deadlines. The candidate must have flexibility and availability to be present on some nights, weekends, and holidays. While performing the duties of this job, the Maintenance Specialist is required to stand, walk, talk, reach, sit and perform repetitive motions of hands/wrists and must be willing to work in adverse conditions such as in the heat, cold, outdoors, etc.. The ability to regularly lift and move items up to fifty pounds and the ability to perform physical tasks related to facility maintenance is required.
