Reports to: Preschool Director / Executive Director
Primary Functions: The School Social Worker’s primary responsibility will be to assist the school in meeting the needs of its students, parents/guardians, and teachers. When providing direct and individual services to students, the Social Worker focuses on helping students fully develop their potential socially, emotionally, physically, and intellectually. This will be accomplished by working alongside school staff and serving as a liaison between the school, teachers, families, and community organizations.
Essential Functions:
- Show respect for children and families of varying cultures.
- Make the safety of all children the top priority.
- Stay calm in stressful situations, helping lead staff and families to a peaceful resolution.
- Coordinate with teachers, administrators, and resource specialists for the purpose of providing/receiving requested information and/or making recommendations.
- Provide individual and group counseling to students.
- Facilitate a teamwork approach in planning and developing student services.
- Consult with teachers and administrators in planning strategies for change.
- Provide family counseling and parent education dealing with expectations, behaviors and family relationships.
- Provide crisis intervention and referral services.
- Present information in professional development meetings to communicate, gain feedback and ensure adherence to established internal protocols.
- Maintain accurate and complete service delivery records that are relevant to planning, management, and evaluation of services provided.
- Perform other duties as necessary to ensure efficient functioning of the St. Mary’s Early Childhood Center.
Position Specifications/Requirements:
- Be punctual and regular in attendance.
- Good organization and planning skills.
- Self-motivated. Ability to work with minimal supervision.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality is required.
- Possess knowledge and understanding basic to the social work/counselor profession.
- Ability to identify a professional interest and commitment to school social work practice.
- Display effective communication skills in relating to children and families.
- Flexibility is required to independently work with others in a wide variety of circumstances.
- Willingness to foster the mission of the Archdiocese of Indianapolis. Acceptance of the beliefs and ways of the work of SMECC.
- Understand and comply with Archdiocese of Indianapolis Code of Conduct.
Education, Training, And Experience:
- Hold Master of Social Work Degree
- Meet Social Work Licensing requirements of the State of Indiana
- Have experience working with children and families; school experience preferred.
- Successfully complete the Archdiocese Safe Parish training.
- Successfully complete the Archdiocesan background screening.
- Successfully complete state licensing requirements: fingerprints, consent to inform, drug test, physical, and annual TB test
Working Environment: This position requires being able to protect children from a place or situation of danger, which may include walking and/or running quickly; use a calm but firm demeanor in high to moderate stressful situations; work in a busy setting while building relationships with families, students, and teachers. Traveling between building sites is required.
