Purpose of Your Job Position
The Primary Purpose of your job position is directly assisting the Director of the Nursing with the day-to-day operations of the Nursing Services Department.
Delegation of Authority
· As the Assistant Director of Nursing, you are delegated the authority, responsibility and accountability necessary for carrying out your assigned duties.
· Assume responsibilities of the Director of Nursing in his/her absence.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Administrative Functions
· Make rounds on all nursing units. Participate with the Clinical Round Table (CRT) by review of the 24-hour report, Supervisor shift report, and Unit Manager’s oral report and follow up as appropriate.
· Plan, coordinate and provide assistance in resident care.
· Make wound rounds with the unit mangers on a regular basis.
· Provide leadership under the Director of Nursing’s (DON) direction in formulating, clarifying and implementing the philosophy and objectives of St. Mary’s Nursing Center, Inc. (SMNCI) in regards to resident’s care.
· Communicate with staff any information, which would impact their providing of resident care.
· Communicate with DON any information regarding resident care, nursing personnel or any situation, which would impact the nursing department.
· Recommend to DON pertinent items for agenda for supervisor, Unit Manager (UM) or Department Director meetings.
· Assist the DON with gathering, auditing and tracking clinical data for performance improvement.
· Act as a liaison between nursing department and outside vendors when appropriate.
· Participate in development of nursing policy and procedures.
· Performs other related utilities as assigned by the DON.
· Ensure all labs are received and distributed to the appropriate provider/unit for follow up.
· Ensure that the daily lab log is provide to the billing office for appropriate billing.
· Maintain and inform department directors of resident information i.e.; physician coverage in house, respiratory metrics, wanderguard listing)

Committee Functions
· Actively participate in various committees of the facility (i.e., Infection Control, Quality Assurance & Assessment, At Risk, Safety Committee, and Employee Incentive).
· Attend family meetings as the Nursing Services representative as needed.
Personnel Functions/Staffing
· Generate, manage and update master nursing schedule for the facility in accordance with budgetary goals, census fluctuations, call-outs, and pre-planned leaves of absence.
· Monitor daily staffing needs and communicate as needed with Director of Nursing to work through scheduling/staffing issues and ensure appropriate levels of staffing throughout the facility.
· Make changes and adjustments to schedule using approved, appropriate documentation.
· Review and process requests for time off and unplanned absences and ensure replacement for absent staff in accordance with Center policy and census levels.
· Strategically manage schedule to minimize overtime and premium pay, while maximizing utilization of staff.
· Complete reports related to staffing levels and overtime goals.
· Maintain accurate attendance records for nursing staff and participate in progressive disciplinary process for absenteeism by completing and presenting attendance warnings and write-ups.
· Work closely with Staff Development Instructor to participate in new hire orientation and coordinate orientation schedules for new staff.
· Maintain a roster of current Nursing personnel with contact information.
· Record and process all variations from published schedule, forwarding associated time-off requests to Payroll and the employee health nurse.
· Ensure physicians notes from staff are properly submitted to the Infection Control Nurse.
· Receive and process incoming requests regarding schedule, changes to schedule, and call-outs.
· Create and maintain master schedule for nursing staff.
· Coordination/tracking of all agency staff
Staff Development
· Attend and participate in workshops seminars, etc., to keep abreast of current changes in the long-term care filed, as well as to maintain a professional status.
· Provide career guidance and counseling to the nursing department personnel.
· Assist with the develop of programs to assist staff in achieving quality care for residents.
· Interact with nursing supervisors and unit managers on an ongoing basis to ensure nursing policy and procedures are being enforced.
· Interact with Staff Development Coordinator as appropriate.
· Must complete/attend mandatory in-services via Relais and/or in person.
Safety and Sanitation
· Monitor Infection Control and skin/wound management.
· Ensure that all personnel performing tasks that involve potential exposure to blood/body fluids participate in appropriate in-service training programs prior to performing such tasks.
· Monitor contract nursing service personnel to ensure that they are following established safety regulations in the use of equipment and supplies.
· Ensure that contract nursing service personnel follow established departmental policies and procedures, including appropriate dress codes.
· Ensure that contract nursing service personnel participate in and conduct all fire safety and disaster preparedness drills in a safe and professional manner.
· Assist the Infection Control and Safety Committee in the development, implementation, and revision of written aseptic and isolation techniques.

· Participate in the development, implementation and maintenance of the procedures for reporting hazardous conditions or equipment.
Equipment and Supply Functions
· Provide Accounts Payable Department with written requests of equipment and supply needs.
· Participate in the development and implementation of the procedures for the safe operation of all nursing service equipment.
· Oversite of supply management/ordering for the nursing department to ensure products meet resident needs are within budget.
· Complete and maintain the facility spreadsheet for incontinence products to ensure products are meeting resident needs and within budget.
Care Plan and Assessment Functions
· Participate in the development of written preliminary and comprehensive assessments of the nursing needs of each resident.
· Participate in the development of a written care plan (preliminary and comprehensive) for each resident that identifies the problems/needs of the resident, indicates the care to be given, goals to be accomplished, and which professional service is responsible for each element of care.
· Ensure all personnel involved in providing care to residents are aware of the resident’s care plans. Ensure that nursing personnel refer to the resident’s care plan prior to administering daily care to the resident.
· Review nurses’ notes to determine if the care plan is being followed.
· Represent Nursing Services in Care Plan meetings, as appropriate.
Budget and Planning Functions
· Keep abreast of economic conditions/situations, and recommend to the Director adjustments in nursing services that ensure the continued ability to provide quality care.
· Recommend to the Director the equipment needs of the nursing service department.
Resident Rights
· Maintain confidentiality of all resident information.
· Maintain the confidentiality of all resident care information.
· Monitor nursing care to ensure that all residents are treated fairly, and with kindness, dignity, and respect.
· Ensure that all nursing care is provided in privacy and that nursing service personnel knock before entering the resident’s room
· Ensure that all nursing service personnel are knowledgeable to the residents’ responsibilities and rights including the right to refuse treatment.
· Review complaints and grievances made by the resident and make a written/oral report to the Director indicating what action(s) were taken to resolve the complaint or grievance. Follow the established procedure of the facility.
· Maintain a written record of the resident’s complaints and/or grievances that indicates the action taken to resolve the complaint and the current status of the complaint.
· Ensure that appropriate notices are received by the resident before his/her room or roommate is changed.
· Report and investigate all allegations of resident abuse and/or misappropriation of resident property.
· Ensure that nursing staff personnel honor the resident’s refusal of treatment request. Ensure that such requests are in accordance with the facility’s policies governing advance directives.

· Ensure that the resident’s right to fair and equitable treatment, self-determination, individuality, privacy, property and civil rights, including the right to wage complaints, are well established and maintained at all times.
Working Conditions
· Works in office areas as well as throughout the facility and its premises.
· Moves intermittently during working hours.
· Is subject to frequent interruptions.
· Is involved with residents, family member, personnel, visitors, government agencies/personnel, etc., under all conditions/circumstances.
· Is subject to hostile and emotionally upset residents, family members, personnel and visitors.
· Works beyond normal working hours and on weekends and holidays when necessary.
· Participates in the facility call rotations for staffing and RN coverage.
· Is subject to call-back during emergency conditions (e.g., severe weather, evacuation, post-disaster, etc.).
· May be involved in community/civic health matters/projects.
· Attends and participates in continuing educational programs
· Is subject to injury from falls, burns from equipment, odors, etc., throughout the workdays, as well as reaction from dust, disinfectants, tobacco smoke and other air contaminants.
· Is subject to exposure to infectious waste, diseases, conditions, etc., including TB and the AIDS and Hepatitis B viruses.
· May be subject to the handling of and exposure to hazardous chemicals.
Requirements:
Educational Requirements
· Must be currently licensed and registered in the state of Maryland as a Registered Nurse.
Experience
· Shall have recently practiced as a staff nurse at least 2 years, preferably in a long tern care setting.
· Must have, as a minimum, one (1) year of training experience in rehabilitative and restorative nursing practices.
Specific Requirements
· Must demonstrate knowledge of gerontological concepts through clinical practices.
· Must be able to read, write, speak, and understand the English language.
· Must possess the ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such action.
· Must possess the ability to deal tactfully with personnel, residents, family members, visitors, government agencies/personnel, and the general public.
· Must be knowledgeable of nursing and medical practices and procedures, as well as laws, regulations, and guidelines pertaining to long-term care.
· Must possess leadership and supervisory ability and the willingness to work harmoniously with and supervise other personnel.
· Must possess the ability to plan, organize, develop, implement, and interpret the programs, goals, objectives, policies and procedures, etc., that are necessary for providing quality care.
· Must be able to relate information concerning a resident’s condition.
· Must not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the workplace.
