What are the responsibilities and job description for the Teacher's Aide position at St Mary's School for the Deaf?
:
(1) Graduation from high school and three (3) plus years’ experience as a Teacher’s Aide in a school setting.
(2) Must have the ability or desire to obtain the appropriate NYS Teacher Assistant Credentials/certification to move into a Teacher Assistant position.
(3) Must have experience working with deaf students in an educational setting; and/or experience working with students with special needs, autism, intellectual and/or emotional disabilities
(4) The ability to successfully complete a Sign Language Proficiency Interview (SLPI) at the proficiency level defined for each position as determined by SMSD OR The willingness to train toward successful completion of a Sign Language Proficiency Interview (SLPI) at the proficiency level defined for each position as determined by SMSD.
NOTE: The school may also require employees in this classification to complete successful training in behavior management programs including but not limited to TCI (Therapeutic Crisis Intervention) which will be provided by St. Mary’s School for the Deaf.
· May assist in classroom with, teaching materials development, bus duty, educational activities, required reports and special duties as assigned by the classroom teacher or immediate supervisor.
· May assist in the classroom under the direction of the teacher by assisting students individually and in small groups with homework, projects, etc.
· May assist students with physical day-to-day activities including lifting multiply handicapped students to and from wheelchairs, toileting and changing diapers.
· Assist in behavior management (as prescribed for each student) and discussion problems or changes with classroom teacher.
· Assists students with cafeteria and bus duty activities.
. Assists in the preparation of teaching materials, which may include but is not limited to copying, gathering information, word processing, collating, pasting, bulletin boards and cutting materials.
· Assists Teacher to ensure that school and safety rules are followed by students in and out of the classroom.
· Accompanies students to classes i.e.: Speech, Music, Art, Physical Education, and other activities or unique events that occur outside the classroom.
· Intercedes in emergency situations as needed and necessary.
· Attend departmental and staff mandatory meetings or other contractual or required school meetings.
· Perform other duties as assigned or as needed by the classroom teacher or supervisor.
