Teaching Assistant, Lower School (K-5)
Reports to: Head of Lower School
Status: Full-time, hourly, non-exempt, 10 month
Purpose: To provide assistance for Kindergarten through Grade 5 teachers. To provide supervision of students during morning drop-off, recess, lunch breaks and afternoon pick-up.
Schedule: Typical hours are 7:45-3:45, Monday - Thursday and 7:45 - 1:45 on Fridays. Some days will need to be flexible for evening events like Back to School Night, Open House, etc.
Duties:
- Collaborate with classroom/grade-level teachers to develop and implement effective lesson plans that fulfill the requirements of the school’s curricular program.
- At the teacher’s direction, plan and use appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of students assigned.
- Support a safe classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate for the intellectual, emotional, physical and social growth.
- Maintain records of academic performance by scanning and filing individual student’s International Baccalaureate (IB) portfolio throughout the year.
- Manage student behavior in accordance with the St. Mary’s parent handbook. Have familiarity with Responsive Classroom program for classroom management.
- Supervise students during morning drop-off, recess, lunch breaks and afternoon pick-up.
- Provide substitute coverage during the teacher’s short term absences.
- Assist with morning traffic duty.
- Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
- Maintain a professional relationship with all colleagues, students, parents and members of the school community.
- Support the School and its leadership.
- Other duties as required by the Head of Lower School and Head of School.
Minimum Requirements:
1. Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university or equivalent experience working with school age children.
2. Experience working with children in grades K-5.
3. Must possess a love for children.
4. Ability to nurture student’s natural inquisitive desire to learn.
5. Outstanding interpersonal skills with a strong customer service focus.
6. Highly ethical team player.
7. High energy, self-starter with ability to successfully prioritize and multi-task in an atmosphere in which time-sensitive deadlines are the norm, as are interruptions.
8. Strong computer skills with a proficiency in MS Office.
9. Must be able to stand, sit, and walk for extended periods of time

Pay: $18.00 - $23.00 per hour
