Manager, Environmental Sustainability and Compliance

Responsible for establishing, implementing, and maintaining comprehensive sustainability and environmental health, safety, and compliance programs for the University. This position will help to evaluate, identify and implement campus sustainability initiatives in partnership with the Laudato Si Implementation Committee on Sustainability and the campus facilities department. This position reports directly to the Office of Facilities Services where it helps to manage numerous compliance related programs in the areas of environmental health and safety while simultaneously promoting sustainability initiatives across the campus.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Sustainability:

  • Establishes and maintains enterprise tools to monitor, assess, and communicate performance, sustainability and compliance metrics. This includes the American Association for Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE) sustainability tracking tool (STARS) in addition to other available tools.
  • Baseline the campus's sustainability-based consumption or generation metrics to serve as a basis for sustainability initiatives. Develop and maintain systems to record trends in these metrics.
  • Works collaboratively with the Laudato Si Implementation Committee on Sustainability initiatives while also working within the practical realities of facilities operations.
  • Continues to enhance the recycling efforts currently underway while working with campus partners to expand and strengthen partnerships that enhance environmental awareness.
  • Identifies synergies that help to capitalize on sustainability matters that also reduce campus operating expenses.
  • Prepares reports that help to outline campus baselines and help to highlight campus environmental successes to aid in grant proposals and to highlight program success.
  • Serves as a member of the Laudato Si Implementation Committee on Sustainability.

Compliance:

  • Conducts risk management and safety educational programs; providing risk management perspective on institutional initiatives and situations; and complying with risk management standards of federal, state and local regulatory agencies, with the objective of promoting safety in areas of required environmental health and safety.
  • Maintains all EHS records for the university and ensures all reporting responsibilities are property carried out.
  • Maintains a current understanding of trends within EHS and keep up to date on reporting responsibilities.
  • Responds to any EHS related issues that may arise at the university.
  • Professionally works with departments outside of facilities to ensure that waste streams are properly adhered to and documented.
  • Provides the development, training, implementation, and management of shop policies and procedures that realize the full potential of the resources of the university while providing a safe and sustainable work environment.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Natural Sciences, Engineering, Environmental Science, or Business preferred.
  • Demonstrable experience working in a regulated industry with at least some project management experience. Willingness to gain a functional knowledge of U.S. and Texas, regulations and codes. Professional Certifications in Risk Management, Engineering or sustainability are preferred.
  • Must have valid driver's license, motor vehicle liability insurance, and personal injury insurance, or have a self-reliant source of transportation to conduct business on a daily basis.
  • Must clear and maintain a favorable background investigation and clearance.
  • Must have the ability to demonstrate intermediate skills in MS Office (Word, Excel, Teams, and PowerPoint). experience with virtual meeting platforms such as Zoom. AutoCAD 2000 or similar and/or work order systems (TMA) experience a plus.
  • Capable of managing an operating budget and working within a diverse organization with competing priorities.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to gain commitment at all levels within the organization.
  • Experience in assessment, policy development and analysis with a particular emphasis on a regulatory focus in areas of environmental health and safety.
  • Understanding of how budgetary constraints may guide or influence priority.
  • Willingness to gain additional knowledge in areas that will directly benefit the job outcomes this position is tied to.
  • Capable of conducting SWOT analysis across the organization with a balanced emphasis on strategic and tactical objectives needed to meet compliance requirements.
  • Technically proficient in Microsoft Office programs and collaborative meeting-based software. Capable of learning new software programs including the AASHE STARS assessment.
  • Willingness to gain certifications though the job in OSHA, asbestos and other areas of environmental compliance/safety/sustainability.
  • Maintain satisfactory and harmonious relationships with the campus community to assure/sustain quality service and appropriate interactions with others.
  • Must be capable of demonstrating strong analytical skills, attention to detail and be able to organize workflow, coordinate activities, balance simultaneous projects without loss of efficiency in a multi-tasked environment.
  • High level of professional and personal conduct, energy and enthusiasm, and requiring limited supervision.
  • Bilingual Preferred (English/Spanish with the ability to understand and to make one's self understood to Spanish speaking individuals)


PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Working conditions are in an office environment and university campus setting. Must be able to move across the university campus to conduct day to day business. Employee will work in an office environment but may be exposed to various temperature conditions and noise levels ranges
  • While performing this role, the employee will be regularly required to sit, walk, and stand; talk and hear, both in person and by telephone; and be able to lift up to 25 pounds
  • May work outside and inside, on slippery or uneven walking surfaces; frequent exposure to extreme hot and cold temperatures, insects, dust, toxic chemicals and fumes, noise, vibration, and electrical hazards; workaround gas lines; work around machinery with moving parts; may work in tight or enclosed spaces; may work alone; may work irregular hours
  • Must have the ability to perform duties outdoors in various weather conditions such as, rain, cold/hot days if necessary
  • Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Frequently communicates with others using approved technological resources; must be able to exchange accurate information through designated systems within a timely manner
  • Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery
