Summary:

The Learning Specialist fulfills the mission of the Catholic school by working closely with students, teachers, and parents to support students' emotional and academic growth, all in alignment with the Catholic school's mission and values. The role involves providing intervention to students, instructional support to teachers, and creating specialized learning plans for students based on demonstrated need. 


Position Responsibilities:

  • Supports and upholds the philosophy of Catholic education and the mission of the school
  • Acts as a witness to Gospel values by modeling the teachings of the Catholic Church
  • Supports and adheres to the policies and procedures of the school and Archdiocese of San Antonio, including the Religious Standards for Catholic School Employees
  • Maintains confidentiality regarding school matters
  • Adheres to safety training and protocols on a daily basis, and takes precautionary measures to ensure the safety and well-being of self, others. 
  • Responsible for protecting the confidentiality of any information or material obtained in the service with the organization to include but not limited to client names and information, services rendered to clients, donors names and gifts, internal and external investigations or results of any investigations, and financial information.
  • Adherence to the Code of Conduct and the Faith and Moral Policy is mandatory.
  • Every employee is required to take a solution-oriented approach in their interactions and undertakings, as well as being a team member that promotes collaboration and commitment to the Mission and Vision of the organization.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Key Responsibilities:


Assessment & Evaluation: 

  • Collect and review assessment data to identify students’ academic strengths and challenges.
  • Work with teachers to interpret data from standardized tests and other assessments to inform instruction.
  • Develop specialized learning plans (SLPs) for students with learning differences or challenges.

Instructional Support:

  • Provide one-on-one or small group instruction tailored to students' specific academic needs.
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers to design differentiated lesson plans and materials that support diverse learners.
  • Provide interventions for students who are struggling in areas such as reading, math, or writing, using research-based strategies.

Collaboration with Teachers and Staff:

  • Work closely with classroom teachers to monitor student progress and make adjustments to instruction as needed.
  • Participate in regular team meetings with school administrators and other staff to discuss student progress and instructional strategies.
  • Collaborate with instructional assistants who deliver intervention and dyslexia lessons. 
  • Oversee dyslexia and intervention programs and develop all lesson plans.

Communication:

  • Establish and maintain open communication by conducting conferences with parents, students, principals, and teachers.
  • Communicate with parents about their child’s progress, providing strategies for supporting learning at home.
  • Maintain a professional relationship with colleagues, students, parents, and community members
  • Use effective communication skills to present information accurately and clearly.
  • Hold parent conferences as needed to discuss individual learning plans and interventions.

Documentation and Reporting:

  • Maintain thorough records of student progress, interventions, and assessment results.
  • Prepare reports for parents, school administrators, and other stakeholders as required.
  • Ensure compliance with any state or diocesan guidelines related to educational support services.

Student Growth and Development

  • Assist with creating a safe, supportive, and nurturing learning environment.
  • Participate in school activities, including meetings, professional development, and events that promote the school’s mission.
  • Help students analyze and improve study methods and habits
  • Conduct ongoing assessment of student achievement through formal and informal testing.
  • Assume responsibility for extracurricular activities as assigned. Sponsor outside activities approved by the principal.
  • Be a positive role model for students and support mission of Catholic education.
  • Manage student behavior in accordance with Student Code of Conduct and student handbook.

Professional Growth and Development

  • Participate in staff development activities to improve job-related skills.
  • Keep informed of and comply with Department of Catholic school regulations and policies for classroom teachers. 
  • Compile, maintain, and file all physical and computerized reports, records, and other document required.
  • Attend and participate in faculty meetings and serve on staff committees as required.

Requirements

RequirementsMinimum Qualifications:Education

  • A Bachelor’s degree

License and Credentials

  • 12 credit hours in education courses or a valid, appropriate state certificate, as outlined in the Texas Catholic Conference Education Department standards.
  • Special education certification, preferred 
  • Technology proficiency in the areas of word processing, spreadsheets, databases, and internet use for educational purposes and multimedia presentations.
  • Demonstrated competency in the subject assigned area(s).
  • Must pass archdiocesan Safe Environment Requirements and background screening.

Minimum Knowledge and Skills:

  • Knowledge of subject assigned general knowledge of curriculum and instruction
  • Ability to instruct students and manage their behavior.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills. 
  • Must be detail oriented, organized, self-motivated, work well independently and on a team;
  • Must have strong written and verbal skills.
  • Maybe required to work some weekends and nights.
  • Required to work a minimum a full school day
  • Must have good critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
