Overview of Position: The Church Accountant is responsible for maintaining the financial records of the church, ensuring accurate reporting, and supporting the financial operations of the church. The Church Accountant works closely with the Church Administrator and other church leadership to ensure financial integrity and transparency.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Maintain accurate and up-to-date financial records of the church.
2. Process and record all financial transactions, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, bank deposits, and monthly journal entries.
3. Manage expense reimbursements and ensure proper documentation.
4. Reconcile bank statements, credit card statements, and other financial accounts regularly.
5. Coordinate and support the financial reporting for the weekday preschool.
6. Process sales tax returns.
7. Maintain and organize financial documents, vendor files, fixed asset records, and invoices.
8. Assist the Church Administrator in preparing and monitoring the church’s budget.
9. Provide financial reports for church committees, ministries, and other stakeholders as needed
10. Ensure compliance with church financial policies, accounting standards, and legal regulations.
11. Assist in preparing documents for audits and financial reviews.
12. Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
1. Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
2. Prior experience in nonprofit or church accounting preferred.
3. Working knowledge of computer systems including Microsoft Office and accounting software.
4. Excellent verbal, written, and listening skills necessary to foster effective communication in the church organization.
5. Self-starter with excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
6. Ability to handle confidential information with integrity.
7. Knowledge of church financial operations and stewardship principles is a plus.
8. Timely and consistent attendance.
9. Willing to submit to a criminal background check.
