Annual Longevity Pay Scale: In addition to their base salary an employee will receive the following pay increase of
3% after the 1st year

Position Title: Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)
Division: EMS Operations
Supervised by: EMS Battalion Chief
Supervises: N/A
Status: Non-Exempt
I. Position Purpose
The Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) is a skilled and specialized medical professional. They provide basic medical care to ill and injured persons in a pre-hospital setting. They serve as an advocate for the patient to insure proper care. They serve as an ambassador for the organization and deal with the public, family members, other providers and agencies in a manner consistent with the highest professional standards.
II. Working Conditions
Primarily outdoors, in all seasons and weather conditions, occasionally indoor office settings and classroom. The EMT may be exposed to a variety of hazardous working conditions as a routine part of their employment. They may be exposed to dusts, fumes, smoke, adverse weather, rough terrain and chemicals. They may be exposed to potentially infectious materials. They may meet violent persons or patients, traffic hazards and any other hazard associated with emergency scenes. This is not intended to be an all-inclusive list. The EMT is expected to limit their exposure to these hazards by following safety related policy, utilizing engineering safety controls and methods, wearing appropriate protective gear and employing common sense. They are not expected or authorized to take actions that would expose them to unreasonable risks to self and others.
III. Physical Demands:
- The EMT will routinely be exposed to physically demanding situations. The EMT must maintain the ability to endure climbing, reaching, sitting, walking, lifting, grasping, pushing and pulling. They must be able to work in a variety of terrains, weather conditions and other hazardous conditions. They must be able to wear appropriate protective equipment. They must be able to lift, carry and deploy job related equipment.
IV. Mental Demands:
- The EMT will be regularly exposed to mentally stressful and demanding situations. They must demonstrate the ability to face such situations in a calm and professional manner. They must always maintain a positive and cooperative working posture and maintain a professional manner while working in these conditions. The EMT must demonstrate the ability to make sound judgements in these conditions.
V. Responsibilities / Duties / Functions / Tasks
- The EMT shall receive their immediate supervision from their assigned Paramedic. They report to the On-Duty Station Captain for the start of their shift. They receive their medical supervision from the Assistant Chief: EMS and the Department Medical Director.
- Have a good understanding of the districts policies, procedures, and employee manual
- Abide by the requirements of the Administrative Policies and the Standard Operating Procedures of St. Matthews Fire & Rescue.
- Provide safe and effective BLS within the scope of their training medical protocols.
- Administer care to ill or injured patients at the scene of a medical emergency.
- Maintain knowledge of practices, methods, protocols, guidelines and techniques for responding to emergency or non-emergency situations.
- Perform required inspections to insure medical supplies are stocked, equipment and apparatus is clean and operational at all times.
- Assure that inventory of disposable items and medical equipment is controlled in the manner prescribed by policy.
- Assures the policies regarding the handling of Controlled Substances is strictly followed.
- Assures that all documentation is accurate and completed in a timely manner, prior to submission.
- Conducts post incident analysis with co-workers to point out positive points, assure quality documentation, areas of improvement and to ensure adequate skills are maintained.
- Participates in continuing education training classes as an instructor or student.
- Helps identify training needs and continuously monitors themselves in an ongoing skills assessment.
- Must be able to operate emergency vehicles in accordance with District driving procedures and EMS SOG.
- Maintain a strict level of security concerning confidentiality of all protected medical information.
- Reports to work regularly, on time and dressed appropriately.
- Assists other emergency service agencies as required/requested.
- Performs other assigned duties as directed.
- Notify their supervisor of any equipment malfunction, lost or missing equipment, and/or needed equipment including personal, station, or apparatus.
- Notify their supervisor of any change in status of their EMT certification, or their ability to function as an EMT in the Commonwealth of Kentucky.
- Notify his/her supervisor of any change of address or phone number within two (2) weeks of the change.
- Notify his/her supervisor immediately of any criminal charges or motor vehicle violations.
VI. Special Position Requirements
The employee may be required to perform all job functions under hazardous and/or austere conditions, while being exposed to all weather types and/or under extreme stress.
VII. Probation Period
Per SOG 02.006 Probation Period for New Employees, all new hires shall be on probation for a period of 12 months.
Requirements
Minimum Qualifications
Must meet the following requirements:
Be 18 years of age or older
Possess a High school Diploma or GED
Possess a valid driver’s license
Satisfactory background check and driving history record
Successfully complete a medical/drug screening
Must have and maintain the following minimum EMS qualifications:
KY State and/or National Registry EMT certification as prescribed by the
Kentucky Board of EMS
AHA certification in:
BLS Healthcare Provider
Pediatric Emergency Assessment Recognition and Stabilization (PEARS)
