The mission of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Washington is to spread the light of the Gospel of
Jesus Christ to the world. In the faithful pursuit of this mission, St. Matthias the Apostle Parish in Lanham, MD seeks a parish secretary. The Parish Secretary reports to and provides support to the Pastor and parish staff.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities
- Opens the parish office at 8:00am. Closes the office at 4:00pm.
- Prepares and transmits the weekly parish bulletin, Greetings, Announcements and Petitions.
- Provides secretarial and clerical services to the Pastor.
- Enters offertory collection data in database and provides regular reports to the Pastor.
- Manages office inventory of general and religious supplies.
- Coordinates clergy and volunteer schedules.
- Manages parish website and social media outlets in coordination with school staff.
- Other duties as requested.
Required Education and Experience
Must be a practicing Catholic and living in coherence with Catholic ethical and moral teachings. High School diploma or GED is required. Additional education and Spanish-speaking skills would be helpful. At least one year of administrative experience is necessary. All employees must undergo a background check and undertake a written Statement of Confidentiality regarding parish business.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Candidates must have the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Multi-tasking skills and critical thinking are necessary, as well as good organizational practices and a collegial work style. Advanced skills in MS Office (Word, Excel) required and knowledge of ParishSoft Family Suite software is an advantage.
Work Environment
This job is in an office setting and routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, telephones, printers and photocopiers. The responsibilities of this position permit some flexibility in scheduled work hours, but they are not compatible with remote work. This position is a 32 hour per week assignment and offers a comprehensive benefits package.
