Job Title: High School Physical Education Teacher
Department: Physical Education/Athletics
Reports To: School Principal
Job Summary:
We are seeking a passionate and qualified Physical Education teacher to join St. Michael High School starting with the 2025-26 school year. The High School Physical Education (PE) Teacher promotes physical fitness, health, and well-being by teaching students the principles of exercise, sports, and healthy living. This role involves developing engaging lessons, fostering teamwork, and encouraging lifelong fitness habits in a safe and inclusive environment.
Key Responsibilities:
Instruction and Curriculum Development
- Plan and deliver lessons that teach physical fitness, sportsmanship, and healthy lifestyle practices.
- Introduce students to a variety of physical activities, including team sports, individual fitness routines, and recreational games.
- Develop and implement a curriculum aligned with state and national physical education standards.
- Incorporate knowledge of anatomy, nutrition, and mental health into lessons to promote holistic well-being.
Student Development and Assessment
- Assess students’ physical fitness levels and monitor their progress.
- Provide individualized support and encouragement to help students meet fitness goals.
- Teach students the importance of safety, proper techniques, and injury prevention during physical activity.
- Foster an inclusive environment that accommodates students of all fitness levels and abilities.
Classroom and Equipment Management
- Maintain a safe and organized environment for physical activities.
- Inspect and maintain sports equipment, ensuring it is safe and in good condition.
- Enforce rules and procedures to promote safety and prevent injuries.
Collaboration and School Engagement
- Work with colleagues to coordinate school-wide fitness initiatives, such as field days or intramural sports.
- Collaborate with other teachers to integrate physical education into cross-curricular activities.
- Communicate with parents and guardians about student progress and participation.
- Participate in professional development opportunities to stay updated on best practices in physical education.
Qualifications:
Education and Certification
- Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education, Kinesiology, or a related field
- State teaching certification in Physical Education.
- CPR and First Aid certification (preferred).
Skills and Experience
- Strong knowledge of physical fitness, sports, and health education.
- Experience teaching or coaching high school students is preferred.
- Excellent classroom management and organizational skills.
- Ability to motivate and inspire students to adopt healthy habits.
- Knowledge of adaptive physical education practices is a plus.
Work Environment:
- Gymnasium, outdoor fields, and classroom settings.
- May involve physical activity, such as demonstrating exercises or participating in sports.
- Occasional evening or weekend commitments for school sports events or activities.
