The Academic Language/Dyslexia Therapist is responsible for assessing and providing targeted intervention for students with dyslexia and related learning challenges. Utilizing evidence-based practices, this position focuses on enhancing students’ reading, writing, and comprehension skills while promoting their overall academic success. The therapist collaborates with educators, parents, and specialists to create individualized learning plans that address each student’s unique needs.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assessment and Evaluation:
- Conduct comprehensive assessments to identify students’ strengths and areas of need related to language processing and literacy.
- Analyze assessment data to inform instruction and intervention strategies.
- Intervention and Instruction:
- Develop and implement individualized intervention plans based on student assessments and curriculum standards.
- Provide direct instruction in reading, writing and language skills using multisensory and evidence-based approaches.
- Monitor student progress regularly and adjust interventions as needed to ensue effectiveness.
- Collaboration:
- Work closely with classroom teachers, special education staff, and other professionals to support students’ learning goals.
- Communicate regularly with parents and guardians regarding student progress, strategies for support at home, and resources for further assistance.
- Professional Development:
- Stay current with research and best practices in dyslexia therapy and academic language instruction.
- Provide training and support to educators on strategies to assist students with dyslexia and related challenges in the classroom.
- Documentation and Reporting:
- Maintain accurate and detailed records of assessments, interventions, and student progress in compliance with school policies.
- Prepare reports and participate in meetings regarding student performance and program effectiveness.
- Advocacy:
- Advocate for students’ needs and promote awareness of dyslexia and language processing disorders within the school community.
- Engage in outreach efforts to educate parents and staff about dyslexia and effective intervention strategies.
- Support the Mission:
- Uphold the philosophy of Catholic education and the mission on the school, acting as a witness to Gospel values by modeling the teachings of the Roman Catholic Schurch.
- Adhere to all policies outlines in the Catholic Schools Office Handbook and the TCCB ED Guide to Quality and Effectiveness.
Qualifications:
- Master’s Degree in Special Education, Literacy, or related field (preferred).
- Certification as a Dyslexia Therapist or equivalent credentials.
- Experience working with students with dyslexia or language-based learning disabilities.
- Strong knowledge of evidence-based literacy interventions and assessment tools.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse range of students, parents, and educators.
Preferred Skills:
- Familiarity with multisensory strategies (e.g., Orton-Gillingham approach).
- Experience in developing and implementing Individualized Education Plans (IEPs).
- Understanding of child development and learning theories.
