St. Norbert College (SNC), a nationally-ranked, private, Catholic, liberal arts college is seeking a Chemical Hygiene Officer. This position is responsible for ensuring a safe working and laboratory learning environment for students, faculty, and relevant staff at the College, while overseeing the development and implementation of chemical and hazardous materials safety programs within the Unit of Arts and Sciences.
Required Minimum Qualifications:
Specific responsibilities:
- Collaborate with Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Earth Science faculty to prepare lab spaces and experiments to support lab pedagogy and student-faculty research.
- Maintain common-use analytical equipment such as balances and computer-based data acquisition equipment, and assist faculty with the upkeep of major instrumentation: Nuclear Magnetic Resonance spectrophotometer, Infrared spectrophotometer, Ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometer and Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrophotometer.
- Purchase, stocks, and inventories chemicals and supplies; maintain chemical storerooms.
- Ensure regulatory compliance within the Natural Science Division as mandated by local, state, and federal agencies.
- Conduct routine and follow-up chemical safety and hazard inspections of divisional facilities.
- Manage the hazardous chemical waste program in the Division of Natural Sciences.
- Supervise student employee. Instruct faculty, teaching assistants and technicians on safety procedures and precautions.
- Review, revise and implement the Natural Science Division chemical hygiene plan.
- Ensure proper operation of all safety equipment within the Division of Natural Sciences.

Required Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in chemistry or a closely related field.
- 1-2 years experience in a chemical laboratory as a chemist or chemical technician or prior related experience in chemical safety, environmental safety or industrial hygiene is required.
- Prior experience managing chemical waste in a laboratory setting is preferred.
- Training in federal and state regulations, unsafe conditions, and Safety Data Sheets preferred.

- Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced, high-demand environment while managing multiple tasks, meeting deadlines, and prioritizing responsibilities.
