What are the responsibilities and job description for the School Counselor position at St. Paul Elementary?
Saint Paul School is fortunate to have a full-time guidance counselor. This position will (1) implement a social-emotional curriculum (Second Step) for grades Pre-K through 5 and (2) assist the Principal, Nurse, Academic Enrichment and Support Center and faculty in supporting students and parents with mental health issues that may arise. Typical behaviors being exhibited in the student population include separation/situational anxiety, depression, inappropriate/disruptive classroom behavior, and executive function disorders. However, there are more acute behaviors in our middle school population such as risky behaviors, cyberbullying, and inappropriate use of electronic media.
Our School Counselor will take on the following roles within and for our school community:
Develops and implements social-emotional lessons (Second Step Curriculum) and conflict resolution for Prekindergarten through grade 5 through planned activities in classrooms and small group instruction.
Promote a school wide positive mental health environment
To serve as a resource to teachers and families on relevant adolescent topics of mental health and adolescent behaviors
Provides or facilitates in-service training related to supporting students well-being and achievement
Work on a one-to-one basis, in small groups, and within the classroom with students experiencing social, emotional and/or behavioral problems
Provide crisis intervention when necessary
Apply counseling theories and techniques to support students in crisis
Acknowledge signs and symptoms to identity and support students in need that may require a referral for private counseling or require reporting to DCF
Submit reports as required for progress reporting, annual review meetings, and Student Support Team (SST) meetings
Act as a liaison between home and school for the student
Organize and attend parent/teacher/counselor meetings as needed
Attend, participate and advocate for students at IEP meetings
Assist Principal with high school application process and transcript release (Ravenna)
