POSITION SUMMARY

The principal is responsible for the administration and supervision of the educational program, all teaching and non-teaching personnel, and finances of the school.

SUPERVISION AND EVALUATION

The principal is accountable to the Board of Christian Education and through the Board to the Church Council and congregation. The principal will report regularly to the Board regarding all aspects of his/her responsibilities.

RELATIONSHIPS

The principal will work as a team member with the pastors of the congregation in developing and implementing an effective total ministry. The team relationships will be characterized by loyalty and cooperation in a common purpose and ministry for Christ. The team is accountable to the Church Council and congregation. It is the responsibility of the principal to keep the administrative pastor informed on significant school matters.

The principal and the administrative pastor must maintain open communication between each other. The principal is clearly the day to day administrator of the school operation, but the school must remain an agency of the congregation. The administrative pastor, by virtue of his office, has the broad administrative overview of the total parish programs.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES

1. Knowledge of St. Paul organization policies and procedures.

2. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

3. Ability to speak, write, and understand the English Language.

4. Ability to recognize needs and concerns of people and maintain constructive interpersonal relationships.

5. Ability to work independently, demonstrating strong problem solving/organizational skills.

6. Ability to work under pressure of deadlines, including changes in schedules.

7. Ability to comply with personnel handbook.

8. Ability to maintain confidentiality of staff and member information.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

1. Has been a successful teacher and is certified as a Minister of Religion – Commissioned in the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod but not required.

2. Is certified or certifiable by the State of Michigan.

3. Has a degree in education, is actively involved in a program leading to such, or has successfully served as a principal for a minimum of three years and be committed to earning a Master’s level degree in education administration.

4. Continues to advance professionally through reading, conference attendance, and further study.

5. Has a total parish awareness, showing interest in all educational programs of the parish.

6. Is a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church or is willing to become a member.

1. Participates actively in congregational activities, including regular attendance at worship services and Holy Communion.

2. Participates in community activities and takes an active role whenever possible.

3. Is able to clearly articulate objectives of the Lutheran school.

4. Sets annual goals for self, identifies priorities within these goals, and is able to implement them effectively.

5. Understands and used democratic leadership techniques.

6. Is willing to make decisions and exercises good judgment in doing so.

7. Uses time efficiently, organizes work systematically, and follows through on plans.

8. Employs good communication skills: writing, speaking, listening.

9. Is physically and emotionally healthy.

10. Has a pleasant appearance – dress and styles are appropriate.

11. Is open-minded and tolerant, with a positive outlook on life.

12. Is sensitive to the needs of others, showing Christian concern for them and their feelings.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND EXAMPLES

1. Is responsible for implementing policies adopted by the Board of Christian Education and congregation. He/she also provides leadership and assistance in developing new policies.

2. Develops and carries out a program of continuous evaluation of both the school and the teaching and non-teaching personnel.

3. Reports regularly and fully in person to the Board, Church Council, and Voters’ Assembly regarding all aspects of the school’s operation.

4. Oversees preparation and publishing of the school calendar.

5. Facilitates preparation of a budget for Board approval.

6. Provides data necessary for the Board to perform its tasks effectively.

7. Communicates the decisions of the Board to teachers, students, and parents as appropriate.

8. Shall report to the Board of Christian Education at the August meeting on the duties of all faculty members, including himself, regarding the coming school year. He/she may be directed by the Board to do some teaching to help out in the grades with the larger enrollments.

9. Shall report monthly on the amount of substitute teaching being done by himself and other substitute teachers. This shall be broken down to half-days or whole days, whichever is closer.

1. Is responsible for overseeing collection of all monies and maintaining accurate financial records.

2. Is responsible for the overseeing the ordering and purchasing of all school materials and equipment.

3. Is responsible for the overseeing of payment of all school bills.

4. Keeps essential records in a secure place.

5. Keeps a complete inventory of equipment, books, and materials.

6. Keeps accurate, up-to-date information in the teacher files.

7. Keeps accurate, up-to-date information in the student files.

8. Deals adequately with salespeople, personnel of the government and the Church, and the general public.

9. Uses available media for publicity and providing information to the congregation and to the community.

10. Oversees regular distribution of the school news to parents.

11. Is the advisor to the Parent Teacher League in program and organizational matters and attends its executive board and regular meeting.

1. Provides a thorough orientation for new staff members, including non-teaching personnel.

2. Conducts regular meetings of teachers. Conducts meetings of the non-teaching personnel as needed.

3. Assists teachers in their goal-setting process.

4. Reviews the lesson plans of teachers weekly, making recommendations as needed.

5. Makes evaluative visits to each class periodically during the year and discusses the visits with the teachers.

6. Uses teacher evaluation conferences to help teachers establish goals for improvement.

7. Attempts to establish a good atmosphere in the school (one which is conducive to good teaching/learning situations).

8. Helps to create a cooperative spirit among the staff members.

9. Promotes the professional growth of the staff.

10. Supports teachers in their classroom leadership roles.

11. Acknowledges good teacher performance.

12. Represents the needs of the staff before the Board.

13. Is responsible for the publication of the necessary handbooks for the school.

14. Sets the tone and philosophy of the general school discipline and takes part directly in serious matters.

1. Helps teachers plan and execute a quality educational program.

2. Keeps abreast of current educational methods, trends, and materials.

3. Recognizes the professional judgment of teachers in the selection of materials and in the selection of teaching methods.

4. Provides for systematic, constructive study of all areas of the curriculum.

5. Provides for testing in the areas of achievement and intelligence.

1. Monitors each class to be assured that its objectives are being met.

2. Serves as a friend and advisor to children.

3. Communicates effectively with children at all levels.

4. Assists the teachers in their classroom leadership roles, including disciplinary problems and decisions.

5. Is responsible for enforcing the adherence to standards of behavior which have been adopted for the school.

6. Makes arrangements for the testing of children that have been identified by teachers or parents as having special needs.

7. Informs the administrative pastor of matters related to the child’s family life as it pertains to the pastor’s areas of responsibility.

8. Contacts outside agencies to provide remedial help for children in need.

9. Is responsible for the admission, transfer, promotion, acceleration, demotion, suspension, or expulsion of children from the school in conformity with the policies and procedures of the Board of Christian Education.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Duties consist of general office tasks which involve sitting, talking, hearing, seeing, use of hands and fingers, stooping, kneeling, crouching, lifting/carrying and walking.
