Job description SCIENCE TEACHER Reports To: Head of School Primary Purpose: The primary purpose of the teacher is to create an environment, curriculum, and activities to support maximum intellectual, emotional, spiritual, physical and social growth. Qualifications: Education Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university Teacher certification Special Knowledge/Skills Knowledge of developmental issues of assigned student group(s) Maintain current CPR training Knowledge of subject(s) assigned Ability to develop rapport with children Calm and patient demeanor with students and others Good communicator verbally and in written form Skill in the use of technology for communication and for instruction Experience Some experience working with children in an instructional setting highly preferred MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES: Instructional Strategies Develop and implement plans for curriculum program assignment and show written evidence of preparation as required. Present subject matter according to guidelines established by St. Paul’s Episcopal Day School. Cooperate with other members of the faculty and staff in developing and implementing instructional outcomes, objectives, and methods according to school requirements. Adjust instruction to address individual student’s talents and needs. Plan and use appropriate assessments, instructional/learning strategies, activities, materials to challenge and stimulate student learning. Plan and supervise purposeful assignments for teacher aide(s) and/or volunteers. Provide complete guidelines and lesson plans for substitutes in the event of absence. Use appropriate technology in the teaching/learning process. Assist students in analyzing and improving methods and habits of study. Consistently assess students’ achievement through formal and informal assessment. Maintain accurate documentation of student assessments, discipline, and other pertinent information about students. Provide a positive role model that supports the mission of the school. Support and implement the instructional and other goals established by the school. Classroom Management and Organization Create a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of students. Manage student behavior in the classroom and administer discipline according to well-defined classroom guidelines and school procedures and policies. Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities. Assist in selection of equipment and instructional materials for the classroom(s). Public Relations Maintain a positive attitude with faculty, staff, students, clergy, parishioners, and visitors. Establish and maintain an open line of communication with students and their parents. Maintain professional relationships with all colleagues, students, parents and community members. Use acceptable communication skills to present information accurately and clearly. The Episcopal Nature of the School and the School’s Mission Support the Episcopal nature of the school at all times. Carry out the school’s mission. Carry out the school’s goals. Other Maintain absolute confidentiality with all sensitive and legal matters. Participate in staff development training programs, faculty meetings, and special events, as needed. Organize and facilitate the Science Fair at the school level and the regional level. Organize and facilitate Discovery Fair and Invention Convention. Demonstrate behavior that is professional, ethical and responsible. Comply with all school regulations, policies and procedures for classroom teachers. Compile, maintain and file all reports, records and other documents in a timely manner as required. Serve on staff committees as needed. Maintain and uphold the standards of the school accrediting body: Southwestern Association of Episcopal Schools (SAES). Perform all other duties as assigned by the Head or Division Leader. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Supervision of children and instructional aides as appropriate. WORKING CONDITIONS: Mental Demands: Ability to design and implement appropriate curriculum. Ability to implement a variety of instructional approaches as needed for student success. Ability to communicate effectively and with discretion. Ability to maintain emotional control under stress. Ability to maintain calm and patient demeanor. Ability to manage others in a non-coercive manner. Ability to maintain focus on customer satisfaction. Ability to organize and complete multiple tasks in a timely manner. Physical Demands: Frequent standing, stooping; bending; kneeling; pushing and pulling. Ability to lift and carry 50 lb.
