The St. Paul’s Schools is pleased to announce an opening for a full-time upper school choral music teacher for the 2025-2026 school year.

School Overview, Mission & Vision

The St. Paul’s Schools is a family of independent schools in Baltimore County, Maryland. Serving children from infancy through grade 12, our three schools share a 120-acre campus, an Episcopal tradition, and a focus on developing confident, well-balanced students who will use their education and ethics to improve the world. A coordinated structure allows The St. Paul’s Schools to preserve the small-school feel within each school while sharing resources and certain programs to maximize opportunities for students.

Mission: Guided by Episcopal values and a commitment to each student’s full journey, a St. Paul’s education inspires us to lead with love, discover and pursue our unique gifts, and act with courage in all we do.

Vision: St. Paul’s students thrive and serve in a global community. We create transformational experiences through innovative and responsive teaching in a diverse community of authentic belonging.

St. Paul’s School for Boys, founded in 1849, is a college-preparatory day school serving boys in grades 5 through 12. The school’s mission, “Seek truth, knowledge, and excellence; live by faith, compassion, and integrity,” is the daily standard for all members of our community. St. Paul’s School for Boys’ students are thoughtful young men who thrive in an educational community that emphasizes strong relationships, personal growth, and the collective pursuit of integrity.

Position Description

The Choral Tradition at St. Paul's:

Singing has been integral to the experience of St. Paul's students since the school's founding in 1849. Noted internationally for excellence on the concert stage, our singers have performed regularly and captivated audiences in prominent venues worldwide. In our thriving choral program, over one third of the student body sings in one or more of our vocal ensembles. In addition, the school does staff a part time accompanist to support the work of choral music faculty in classes, rehearsals and performances.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Teaching/conducting four upper school classes including a 9th & 10th Grade Choir (TTBB at St. Paul’s School for Boys), 9th Grade Ivynotes (SSA, St. Paul’s School for Girls), 10th – 12th Grade Concert Chorale (Advanced TTBB Ensemble) and an advanced music course: IB Music or AP Music Theory
  • Preparing to teach an advanced SSAA ensemble at St. Paul’s School for Girls in 2026-2027.
  • Overseeing the advanced vocal ensemble, Route 81, auditioned from members of Concert Chorale, that
  • meets outside of the school day and has occasional weekend performances.
  • Coordinating with our Director of Global and Experiential Travel Programs to help plan choral tours for our advanced ensembles every two years during Spring Break.
  • Serving as the primary conductor for the upper school musical productions, including sourcing accompanists and participating as a member of the musical team, attending rehearsals, all shows and pre and post meetings.
  • Partnering with Dean of the Arts and division heads over next two years to develop new curriculum, including future performance opportunities in one SATB ensemble at the upper school level.
  • Other duties as assigned.

The successful candidate will:

  • Demonstrate extensive knowledge of upper school vocal and choral pedagogy in an ensemble setting, as well as a diverse range of vocal/choral genres and cultural influences and incorporate these into classroom instruction and performance practice
  • Demonstrate a proven track record of success in teaching vocal music to upper school students
  • Exhibit mastery of music literacy systems, including solfège, count singing, Kodály hand signs, and knowledge of additional pedagogical approaches/methods as appropriate
  • Foster an exciting, dynamic rehearsal and performance environment where the teaching of musicianship and performance practice are paramount, while instilling pride in the program among students and the greater community
  • Be responsible for planning and leading an international choral tour every other school year during spring break
  • Maintain an active performance schedule with all of our choirs, including large winter and spring performances, including outreach to feeder schools
  • Work closely with the Dean of the Arts, as well as our lower school and middle school music and arts faculty to build and continue to create scope and sequence across ages and schools.

Preferred candidates will possess a degree in Choral Conducting, Music Education and/or Voice, and will have demonstrated excellence and success in choral performance and the classroom. A masters degree is required for this position. They will collaborate regularly in performance with the choral conductor and vocal ensembles from St. Paul's School for Girls. This position will report to the Dean of the Arts and SP Upper School Division Head.

Candidates must have excellent writing, interpersonal, and organizational skills, and the ability to work independently in dealing with the diverse elements of the academic environment. The individual must be capable of managing students in a variety of settings and situations and be actively engaged in the classroom and assigned duty activities.

Beyond classroom instruction, we fully embrace the teacher/coach model at The St. Paul’s Schools and are excited about the vital role our faculty play in our community. We are particularly eager to meet candidates with coaching experience and/or those who can demonstrate initiative and serve as mentors and program leads in a variety of significant ways outside of the classroom. Faculty members also collaborate on additional supervisory responsibilities and shared duties that enrich the school environment.

At St. Paul’s Schools, we are dedicated to fostering a nurturing and inclusive learning environment where every individual is celebrated for their unique strengths and contributions. We believe that diversity enriches education, empowering students to reach their fullest potential. By embracing a culture of inclusion, we prepare our students to succeed in an increasingly interconnected and multicultural world. We stand firmly against all forms of prejudice, including those related to race, ethnicity, religion, socioeconomic background, gender identity, sexual orientation, and physical appearance.

The St. Paul’s Schools has a compensation scale based on direct years of experience and degree held. For this opportunity, our salary range is $55,000 to $70,000 annually. Candidates with additional experience or qualifications may be offered a salary outside of the range shown.
