Special Needs Summer Assistant

Overview
St. Peter’s is looking to fill an hourly summer position within our Special Needs Ministry on our Kingsland Campus. This position would be for Sunday mornings from June 1 – August 10 for 3 hours a week. The selected applicant will lead or assist in a Special Needs Classroom or serve as a buddy under the direction of our Special Needs Manager. This role involves working with children, teens, and adults who have a variety of physical, emotional, and intellectual delays and diagnoses.

Sunday Duties

• Must be comfortable working with children, teens and adults with special needs of all level of needs
• Lead in self-contained Special Needs Classroom or function as a buddy in needed in the inclusion setting
• Work with the Special Needs Manager to ensure all participants are either buddied up or in the correct self-contained rooms according to age and grade
• Teach the Sunday School curriculum
• Set up and clean up each Sunday
• Direct volunteers in the self-contained room and assist when buddies need additional help
• Assist participants with crafts, games, lessons or other parts of the class and lesson that they need help with
• Be ready to help deescalate any situation with participants regards of age or level of need
• Work with children’s ministry volunteers in the inclusion classrooms

Requirements

• Degree in Special Education or Equivalent
• 2 – 4 years’ experience within a special needs classroom
• CPR certified
• Must be physically able to get up and down from the floor quickly, walk for long periods of time with a student, assist with walking and standing if needed, and able to deescalate situations quickly following CPI guidelines.
• Prefer applicants that are CPI trained, but it is not required

Job Type: Part-time

Pay: $15.00 - $18.00 per hour

Expected hours: 3 per week
