Job Description
Position Summary:
The St. Petersburg Yacht Club (SPYC) is seeking an enthusiastic and knowledgeable Fishing Camp Instructor to lead our youth fishing camps. This role is responsible for teaching campers of varying ages (6-13 years old) and experience levels the fundamentals of fishing in a safe, educational, and fun environment. The ideal candidate is passionate about marine life, enjoys working with children, and is dedicated to fostering a love for the water and respect for our environment.
Key Responsibilities:

Instruction & Education:
- Teach campers fishing techniques, including casting, knot-tying, baiting hooks, catch and release practices, and fish identification.
- Educate campers on local marine life, conservation practices, and water safety.
- Demonstrate proper use and care of fishing equipment.

Safety & Supervision:
- Maintain a safe and organized waterfront environment at all times.
- Supervise campers on docks, boats, and land-based fishing activities.
- Enforce safety protocols and respond to emergencies appropriately.

Program Engagement:
- Create an engaging and enjoyable atmosphere that encourages participation and curiosity.
- Lead daily fishing excursions and related activities.
- Support camp events and activities beyond fishing as needed.

Equipment Maintenance:
- Ensure fishing gear is properly maintained, cleaned, and stored.
- Report any damaged or missing equipment to the Camp Coordinator.

Communication:
- Provide clear instructions and positive feedback to campers.
- Communicate effectively with parents, camp staff, and club leadership.
- Represent SPYC in a professional and friendly manner at all times.
Qualifications:
- Prior experience teaching or leading youth programs preferred.
- Strong knowledge of fishing techniques, marine life, and conservation.
- Comfort working in and around boats, docks, and waterfront areas.
- Certified in CPR and First Aid (or willingness to obtain prior to camp start).
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Positive attitude, patience, and a genuine passion for working with children.
Working Conditions:
- Outdoor environment with exposure to sun, heat, and water.
- Physical requirements include standing for extended periods, lifting up to 30 lbs, and safely operating small boats or equipment.
- Seasonal position aligned with SPYC summer camp schedule (June–August, with potential pre-camp training).
