This is a paid internship, range of $22/hr - $39/hr (depending on role and qualifications) for those currently pursuing undergraduate degrees and higher rates for those currently pursuing graduate level degrees.

Tentative 2025 Internship Dates:

Semester students: May 19th to July 25th    
Quarter students:  June 16th to August 22nd

This position has an option to be extended past the Summer and into the school year, on a part-time basis, and for students who will be attending classes in the Seattle area in the Fall.

DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW  

Sound Transit’s Wayfinding & Signage department oversees agency signage throughout the Puget Sound region – Link, Sounder, ST Express, and Tacoma Link. The Wayfinding & Signage intern will have an opportunity to be a part of the team that oversees our permanent and temporary signage services and learn how a large regional transit system is managed. 

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties.

JOB DUTIES:

  • Work with the entire Wayfinding & Signage Team with a focus on auditing our sign location plan library, updating documentation and database, as well as learning about the overall process of signage design, construction and maintenance.
  • The internship will involve collaborating with other teams, such as the Rider Information, Video Editorial Digital and Design, and ST departments to produce materials for the public.
  • The internship will involve field work such as construction site visits, station inspections, temporary signage installation, as well as office work.
  • The internship will involve project coordination and management, and meeting facilitation.

POTENTIAL PROJECTS:

  • Audit sign location plans, and perform in-person station surveys.
  • Clean up FileMaker Pro Database / data entry & update.
  • Assist in developing signage documents and/or packages: message schedules, sign location plans, production artwork.
  • Assist with Passenger Care Plans / preparing, deployment and removal of temporary signage / punch-listing.
  • Develop Power BI visualization dashboard of EAMS data (signage maintenance data).
  • Market research, peer research.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants must be current college students in good academic standing, enrolled in an accredited associate, bachelor's, or graduate degree program in Visual Communication Design, Graphic Design, Information Systems, Architecture, Business Administration, Marketing or a relevant two-year certificate.   

ADDITIONAL SKILLS:

  • Preferred knowledge of reading construction drawings (architectural plans and technical scale drawings), although this can be taught on the job as well.
  • Experience or familiarity with project management, field work, UI/UX, and/or graphic design experience is a nice-to have but not necessary.
  • A passion and capacity to advocate on behalf of passengers.
  • Attention to detail and willingness to ask questions.
  • Ability to work as part of a team.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Keen attention to detail in all aspects of the job.
  • Self-starter with the ability to work independently.
  • Curiosity and an appetite for learning.
  • A user-centric and strategic approach.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work autonomously within a team environment.
  • Strong analytical abilities, organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated ability to solve problems and work collaboratively.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint
  • Basic understanding of data management.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Work is performed in a standard office environment.
  • Subject to standing, walking, bending, reaching, stooping, and lifting of objects up to 25 pounds; may occasionally be exposed to dangerous machinery when visiting job sites during construction and when working in the field.
