Job Description And Position Requirements
Scheduled Weekly Hours: 40
Shift: Monday -Friday. Hours based on patient need.
Summary of the Job:
A hand therapist is an occupational or physical therapist who, through advanced study, specializes in rehabilitating patients with conditions affecting the hands and upper extremity. A hand therapist works with patients who may have been affected by an accident or trauma leaving them with wounds, scars, burns, injured tendons or nerves, fractures, or even amputation of the finger, hand, or arm. A hand therapist also treats patients who are disabled from the affects of cumulative trauma disorders – such as tennis elbow or carpal tunnel syndrome. Many patients seeking the care of a hand therapist also suffer from such chronic problems as arthritis or a neurological condition. A hand therapist works with the physician and patient – in any situation – to provide a continuum of care. This often starts within days of the injury or surgery right through to the patient’s return to work and/or a productive lifestyle.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor of Science or Master’s degree in Physical Therapy or Occupational Therapy required. Actively licensed as an Occupational or Physical Therapist by the Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners or the Louisiana State Board of Physical Therapy Examiners required. Current Hand Therapist Certification through the Hand Therapy Certification Commission required. Working knowledge of computer software to include, but not be limited to: word processing and spreadsheets. Must be able to work in a fast paced environment with patients of all types and ages. Must possess strong guest relations skills.
Physical Demands:
Must possess good physical health. Some requirements include but are not limited to standing, sitting or walking for long periods of time. Lifting at least 50 pounds is required.
Physical Effort required:
Constant (67% - 100%) – talking, hearing, and seeing
Frequently (34%-66%) – NONE
Occasionally (1%-33%) – lifting, carrying, pushing/pulling, climbing (stairs, ladders, etc.), balancing, stooping, crouching, reaching, and handling/feeling
