POSITION TITLE: Certified Athletic Trainer

REPORTS TO: Supervisor – Twan Russell

YEARS OF EXPERIENCE: 0 – 10 (Recent graduates are encouraged to apply)

EDUCATION: Master’s Degree in Athletic Training or related field

CONTRACT DURATION: 12-month renewable contract

CERTIFICATION/LICENSES: Applicants must be BOC certified and possess state athletic training licensure and Emergency Cardiac Care certification. NPI Number Required.

NUMBER/DESCRIPTION OF STUDENT-ATHLETES RESPONSIBLE FOR: The athletic training staff is responsible for over 1,000 student-athletes associated with 23 sports.

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS: The athletic trainer will travel to away events (when appropriate) via school-provided transportation.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: The athletic trainer position requires the ability to meet medium physical demands. Responsibilities include lifting up to 100 pounds, with frequent lifting and carrying of objects. Medium strength is necessary to assist in positioning student-athletes for examination and providing support as needed. The athletic trainer must also be able to help student-athletes off the playing field.

OVERVIEW:
At St. Thomas Aquinas, the athletic trainer serves as the primary healthcare provider for student-athletes, offering expert rehabilitative care and support. The athletic trainer plays a vital role in preventing, evaluating, and treating sports-related injuries, ensuring the health and safety of athletes both on and off the field.

Key responsibilities include guiding athletes through the intake process for medical forms, educating them on injury prevention, providing immediate care when injuries occur, and documenting and coordinating their recovery. The athletic trainer must communicate clearly and compassionately with other medical staff, coaches, athletes, and their families, ensuring a team-based approach to athlete care.

The athletic trainer must collaborate closely with coaches to assess athletes’ conditions, develop individualized diet, fitness, and rehabilitation plans, and monitor their progress toward a safe return to play. By working with athletes, coaches, families, and medical care providers, the athletic trainer plays a key role in helping each student-athlete achieve their full potential.

Ideal candidates must have a deep understanding of sports-related injuries, treatment methods, and the ability to foster a positive, supportive environment that prioritizes both performance and well-being. The ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays is imperative.

SPECIFIC DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Administer and oversee the care, prevention, evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation of injuries for all student-athletes across all sports teams.
  • Communicate empathetically with parents, physicians, and coaching staff regarding the injury status of athletes, adapting communication style to suit each stakeholder.
  • Prevent athletic injuries through education and intervention.
  • Make appropriate physician referrals and appointments for injured athletes.
  • Coordinate the purchasing and use of all equipment and supplies needed for the operation of the athletic training facility, in accordance with the school's policies and budget.
  • Develop and manage the Athletic Training Facility, including budgets, policies, and procedures to ensure the health, safety, and welfare of all athletes.
  • Develop and maintain all department guidelines, policies, and procedures in accordance with ADOM, FHSAA, BCAA, state, county, and national best practices.
  • Organize and maintain all medical records in compliance with ADOM, FHSAA, BCAA, federal, and state regulations.
  • Consistently document student-athlete injury evaluation, rehabilitation plans, and progress.
  • Maintain student-athlete clearance information through designated portals – which includes athletic physicals, insurance information, emergency contacts, and required courses.
  • Prepare clear and accurate reports regarding travel, expenditure reconciliations, supply inventory, and sponsorship products (e.g., Gatorade).
  • Develop and maintain emergency action plans for all practice and competition venues in accordance with the school's risk management guidelines and state regulations.
  • Plan and coordinate physical examinations and screenings with the Medical Supervisor.
  • Implement and rehearse health and safety best practices.
  • Knowledge of FHSAA and BCAA rules and regulations reviewed and practiced to ensure compliance.
  • Provide specific clinical care as assigned by the Medical Supervisor.
  • Oversee hydration for each sports team's practice and game.
  • Clean and organize the training room and related facilities, and inspect locker rooms to prevent infections.
  • Help monitor weather conditions and dangerous environments (humidity/lightning) using best practices and protocols.
  • Assist the Athletic Director and coaching staff in determining the safety and optimal condition of athletic facilities.
  • Assist in hosting all athletic events and manage visiting team medical accommodations.
