POSITION SUMMARY:
Responsible for, but not limited to, assisting in the prevention/care/treatment/rehabilitation of student-athletes and their athletic injuries during practice sessions and games, team travel, assisting in the daily operations of the Athletic Training room, and any additional duties assigned by Assistant Athletic Director for Sports Medicine.
CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assist in overseeing all aspects of health care for student-athletes to include, but not necessarily limited to, supervising the operations of the athletics training program and recruitment/supervision of student athletics trainers from local universities and STU.
- Provide immediate first aid, emergency care and evaluation for any injured athlete.
- Assist in the development of protocol for emergency situations during practices and games with Campus Security, Miami-Dade Fire and Rescue, and police.
- Must be present during practice times, in attendance at home contests, and maintain training room and office hours, i.e., 9:00AM - 12 Noon and 1:00PM - 4:00PM.
- Assist in working with student interns and federal work-study students to cover all home games and practices as well as schedule doctor’s appointments and referrals.
- Assist in preseason athletic physical examinations and pre-participating screening for all athletes with the Team Physicians.
- Assist in working with University’s secondary insurance company to complete insurance claims and accident/injury reports in a timely manner.
- Develop protocol for dealing with biohazardous waste.
- Assist in maintaining inventory and order as necessary per established purchasing policies.
- Assist in the organization and implementation of educational seminars for all athletes to attend each semester with collaboration of the Life Skills Coordinator.
- Assist in the organization and implementation of a drug education program in conjunction with the Counseling Center as well as abide by the NAIA policies.
- Assist in all championships hosted by STU.
- Responsible for final clearance with coaches for injured athletes to re-commence participation in sport; ensure proper medical/insurance documentation is on file.
- Serve on University committees as requested.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Assistant Athletic Director for Sports Medicine
SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
The Assistant Director for Sports Medicine gives daily supervision with periodic assistance by the team physicians when necessary, depending on extent of athlete’s injury. Incumbent plans and arranges own work to accomplish assigned objectives using a wide range of procedures.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
Delegation and supervision of Athletics Training interns and work-study students.
Qualifications
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS/SPECIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s Degree required, Master’s degree preferred.
- Must be NATA (National Athletic Trainers Association) BOC certified and meet all licensing requirements within the State of Florida.
- Current certification from American Red Cross in CPR/First Aid required.
- Ability to supervise and train student workers required.
- Position may require exposure to bloodborne pathogens and biohazards.
- Position requires the ability to work irregular work hours.
