Position Summary/Objective
The Driver Helper promotes a culture of safety, hospitality, service, honor, and respect among our homeless guests, our staff, and volunteers, for the purpose of furthering the vision and mission of the St. Vincent de Paul Society.
The Driver’s Helper assists the Driver in picking up donated items from throughout the community and delivering them to the Community Store loading dock/warehouse. The Driver’s Helper also assists in delivering furniture to those in need throughout the Dayton area.
Additionally, the Driver’s Helper assists with day-to-day warehouse activities.
Essential functions
- Assists in the pickup of donated items from throughout the community and unloading the donated items at the Community Store warehouse/loading dock.
- Assists Driver with route directions, completes time log and makes contact calls to donors.
- Assists with coordination of efficient transfer of merchandise from the warehouse to the sales floor.
- Accepts donations at the loading dock as necessary.
- Operates the baler and forklift for unloading and movement of merchandise in the warehouse.
- Advises the Warehouse Supervisor in a timely fashion of any maintenance or repairs needed for equipment used on the dock, and assist in ensuring equipment is in good working order and is properly/safely stored when not in use.
- Consults with Warehouse Supervisor or Driver regarding all concerns and/or decisions.
- May assist in determining usability of donated items.
Physical demands
- Must be able to constantly withstand long periods of sitting, standing and/or walking
- Must be able to lift and carry up to 75 pounds regularly
- Must be able to ascend/descend stairs frequently
Travel percentage
- This is a travel position
Qualifications
Required education and experience
- High School Diploma or Equivalent
- Verbal/written communication skills
- Must be able to frequently position/move self to reposition merchandise
- Must be able to assist in the safe lifting and moving of heavy objects with the assistance of others
- Must be able to operate warehouse machinery, such as hydraulic lift, forklift, and other loading dock apparatus
- Ability to read directions and use maps or logistical assistance, such as GPS or MapQuest, to plot routes.
Preferred education and experience
- 1-2 years of Moving and/or warehouse experience
- 6months Forklift operation experience

- Maintain a valid driver’s license with good driving record
- Accessibility via cell phone
- Travel on agency and/or personal time as required
- Work at various locations
- Work a nonstandard work week as needed
- Work evening or night shift hours as needed
- Provide coverage for other positions, shifts or functions as needed
