Sequencing Laboratorian
Summary
Provide up to two (2) FTE Microbiologist II, for up to a thirty (30) month period. These positions must meet the requirements of the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendment (CLIA) 42 CFR § 493.1489 Standard; Testing personnel qualifications. These positions will perform whole genome sequencing on clinical samples for Hospital Associated Infections, Norovirus, Legionella, Mycobacterium other than tuberculosis (MOTT), and animal samples for Rabies or respiratory diseases, and vectorborne (ticks and mosquitoes) specimens for viral pathogens using Illumina and Nanopore chemistries. This work is conducted in biosafety level 2 and 3 laboratories. All duties are conducted at the Department’s Health and Environmental Testing Laboratory, located in Augusta, Maine. Hours of Operations: Monday through Friday, five (5) days a week, normal work hours such as 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. or 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Qualifications include at a minimum:
Four (4) year combination of education, training, and experience which demonstrates knowledge of medical or environmental technology and/or analytical chemistry and laboratory equipment, testing, and techniques, including:
Experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities related to:
1)PCR, real-time PCR
2) Nucleic acid extraction
3) Culture of bacteria and/or mycobacteriology
4) Must meet the requirements of the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendment (CLIA) 42 CFR § 493.1489 Standard; Testing personnel qualifications.
Training, education, or experience in laboratory work that demonstrates:
1)Excellent interpersonal skills and critical thinking.
2)Excellent communication skills.
3)Ability to handle confidential information with discretion and professionalism.
4)Ability to speak, read, and write English.
5)Ability to independently follow scientific protocols.
Preferred Skills and Qualifications:
1)Illumina and/or Nanopore whole genome sequencing
2) Experience in working in a Biosafety Level 3 Laboratory

Specific Technical Duties:
- Extract DNA and/or RNA from clinical or animal samples using various extraction methods.
- Perform Whole Genome Sequencing on extracted DNA and/or RNA using DHHS LONG-TERM CONT-STAFF DO 6 either Illumina or Nanopore protocols.
- Perform bioinformatic analysis on sequencing datafiles. Validate protocols on an automated system library prep system.
- Validate protocols using Nanopore sequencing technology.
- Accessioning of samples, biological and chemical waste management, reviewing metadata, managing inventory.
- Become CLIA competent and proficient in Whole Genome Sequencing, RealTime PCR, Nucleic Acid Extraction.
- Remote work: Not eligible. In person only. Travel: No travel requirements
- 40 Normal working hours: such as 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. or 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. On call: Not Applicable.
- Allowed time off: Ten (10) days on an annual basis in accordance with 26 MRS § 637 Earned Paid Leave and in support of 26 MRS § 636 Family Sick Leave, prorated based upon the duration of the Engagement.
- Thirteen (13) State holidays on an annual basis, modified and prorated based upon the holidays that align with the Engagement.
