GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK:
D.A.R.E. Officers are a subset of the School Resource Officer program who are assigned to County elementary schools with the primary responsibility of delivering D.A.R.E curriculum instruction to 5th grade students.
- Delivers the 10-lesson D.A.R.E. curriculum to 5th-grade students in all county elementary schools, focusing on decision-making skills to help students resist drugs, alcohol, vapes, peer pressure, bullying, and other high-risk behaviors.
- Administers D.A.R.E. essays and coordinates the D.A.R.E. graduation ceremony.
- Regularly communicates and coordinates with teachers, school administrators, and staff to schedule D.A.R.E. lessons.
- Serves as a resource for students and parents, providing guidance and information about substance abuse prevention and safety.
- Organizes and plans key events such as D.A.R.E. Day and D.A.R.E. fundraising events (e.g., the D.A.R.E. Basketball Game), securing vendors, transportation, players, and community support.
- Works closely with Stafford County Schools, Stafford County Parks and Recreation, Stafford County Pupil Transportation, and other community partners to successfully execute events.
- Maintains responsibilities as a certified law enforcement officer, performing duties related to school security, student safety, and addressing criminal activities on school grounds.
- Assists with other law enforcement duties as needed within the community, such as supporting Sheriff’s Office events and initiatives.
- Participates in community events and activities to promote the D.A.R.E. program and represent the Sheriff’s Office.
- Builds and maintains partnerships with local businesses, organizations, and law enforcement agencies to support D.A.R.E. and other community efforts.
- Demonstrates excellent communication skills to effectively teach students, collaborate with school staff, and engage parents.
- Works as a liaison between schools and the Sheriff's Office to ensure a safe and supportive environment for all students.
Must possess current Virginia DCJS Law Enforcement Certification
2 years of prior Law Enforcement experience REQUIRED
Must have completed or be able to complete School Resource Officer basic course
Must possess or be able to obtain D.A.R.E. Officer certification by D.A.R.E. America
Graduation from high school or high school equivalency
Possession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia
Must meet and maintain all Stafford County Sheriff’s department and State Criminal Justice System training and education requirements for position
Required to be a United States citizen and must be 21 years of age at time of hire
D.A.R.E. Officers must pass physical agilities testing, interview, polygraph examination, full background investigation to include a criminal history check, physical examination, psychological examination and drug and alcohol testing.
This position is designated as essential and may be required report to work during times when the local government/agencies are closed, is subject to call back and hold over to maintain minimum staffing 24/7.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT:
This is heavy work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects; and some work requiring the lifting or dragging, for short distances, of 165 pounds of weight occasionally; work requires climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word, and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly, or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels, and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; visual acuity is required for depth perception, color perception, night vision, peripheral vision, preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration, hazards, atmospheric conditions, and wearing a respirator. The worker may be exposed to blood borne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.
