We have an opening for an entry level Lab Technician, in a laboratory that analyzes mostly coal. We're looking for someone that's dependable, is interested in learning new skills, has general computer skills and knowledge (Excel), is able to stand/sit for periods at a time while completing analysis, is comfortable with repetitive work, is able to complete a job from start to finish and can follow verbal and written instructions (procedures).
This full-time position includes medical benefits, 401K and paid vacation after a period of time. Normal business hours for the lab are Monday-Friday, 8am-5pm. This position does require the employee to arrive prior to normal lab hours, with a normal shift starting between 6am-7am. Daily workload will fluctuate from day to day, depending on the number of samples logged-in, with the potential for overtime. Although not frequent, there are weeks when we're required to work weekends.
General Description: A Lab Tech conducts standardized physical and chemical tests on materials (coal) by performing laboratory duties and analysis. You must be able to follow a procedure when performing sample analysis. We use balances, furnaces, calorimeters and other equipment to perform analysis for elements such as, Mercury, Carbon, Hydrogen, Nitrogen, BTU and other minerals.
Skills Required and Physical Demands: Having a chemistry background or knowledge is a plus. You must be able to follow verbal and written instructions, such as a procedure. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities in regards to the following:
- Education / Experience: No prior experience necessary, training will be provided. High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
- Language Skills: Ability to comprehend simple verbal and written instructions. Ability to document test results, either written or electronically. Ability to effectively present information to management, other technicians and auditors.
- Mathematical Skills: Ability to perform arithmetic in various units of measure using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio and percentage. Ability to draw and interpret graphical information.
- Reasoning Ability: Ability to detect deviations from acceptable criteria. Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out written and oral instructions. Ability to apply critical thinking to standardized situations where company precedent/ legal precedent apply.
- Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee will be required to stand for long periods of time, walk, sit, climb and lift and/or move objects of various weights. Employee should be able to lift 50-75 lbs.
- Work Environment: While performing the duties of this job the employee is exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, pressurized gases, outside weather conditions, risk of electrical shock, vibration and noise exposure. Safety masks, goggles and hearing protection are provided and are required to be worn while the employee is preforming certain tasks.
