As the Shipping/Logistics Manager, you’ll direct the first line shipping and receiving departments. You will plan the day-to-day operations such as assigning labor, authorizing overtime, monitoring and measuring employee utilization and efficiency while working with employees to ensure key metrics are achieved. Must possess a strong communication rhythm, be highly organized with the ability to adapt to a changing work environment.
What you’ll do:
- Directs the first line shipping and receiving departments.
- Responsible for overall shipping/receiving and storage of Hazmat Materials.
- Ensure proper use of corporate freight carriers: bids out heavy freight movements.
- Plans day-to-day operations, assigns manpower, authorizes overtime and controls costs.
- Monitors shipping and receiving docks on a daily basis; makes adjustments as necessary to maintain delivery schedules.
- Coordinates and liaises with production, supply, sales, engineering and customer service to ensure departmental standards and goals are achieved.
- Establishes and implements policies and procedures needed to achieve the business unit's strategic operating goals.
- Performs capacity planning for equipment, floor space and manpower requirements in accordance with forecasted workload.
- Builds and develops team approaches to problem solving and continuous improvement concepts within the assigned area.
- Propose and implement continuous improvement initiatives to support processes and reduce costs
- Enhance operating procedures and tools related to unloading trucks, packing, shipping, and inventory control.
- Liaise with carriers and freight forwarders.
- Resolve any arising problems or complaints.
- File and resolve claims with carriers for loss or damage to goods.
- Comply with laws, regulations, and ISO requirements.
- Assist in management and approval of freight invoicing.
- Ensure adherence to Hazmat, Incoterms, OSHA requirements, and shipping and DOT regulations
- Produces and maintains measures of performance to graphically display performance-related strengths and weaknesses within the cell.
- Monitors, controls and reports on the cell's capital expenditures in relation to budgeted amounts.
- Performs administrative activities necessary for the effective management of the cell, including the selecting of employees, pay administration, budget administration, employee safety, employee counseling and motivation, organization goals and objectives, and planning, organizing, integrating and measuring the work performed within the cell.
- Actively participates in the business unit management team(s), assisting with the development and realization of strategic plans, budgets, goals and outcomes.
- Exercises authority in hiring, training, career development, performance appraisal, salary adjustments, promotion, discipline, health, safety and the general employee relations of direct reports.
- Carries out special projects as assigned.
- May perform shipping and receiving tasks as required.
What skills you will use:
- Minimum 5 years of supervisory experience in a manufacturing or production environment.
- Must be authorized to work in the United States.
- Strong planning, organizational, analytical, leadership, interpersonal, decision making, oral and written communication skills.
- Knowledge of Hazmat, Incoterms, OSHA requirements, and shipping and DOT regulations.
- Strong project management skills.
- Working knowledge of PC's in the current company operating system environment.
- Working knowledge of production management computer systems.
- Working knowledge of company instructions, company processes, administrative policies and procedures, and export compliance regulations.
- Product knowledge of respective business segment is beneficial.
- Experience in packaging and or package design.
Preferred Characteristics:
- Logistic background preferred.
- College degree preferred in engineering, business administration or related discipline (CIM, CPIM, APICS); or equivalent.
- Lean/Six Sigma trained or certified highly preferred.
