Our Nurse Extern Program is specifically designed for nursing students or graduates preparing for licensure that want additional hands-on experience in a clinical setting to compliment academic learning. Through our Nurse Externship, you will have the opportunity to collaborate with a nurse preceptor each shift, learning and honing skills such as time management, critical thinking, and prioritization. The nurse extern program also includes dedicated time for professional development through seminars with leaders and career guidance for entry into the nursing profession. Upon successful completion of the Nurse Externship, you will be invited to apply for the Nurse Residency Program. Job Summary Under the direction of a Registered Nurse, the Nurse Extern assists in direct patient care to assigned patients, practicing in an evidence-based manner, within the Scope of Practice of the California Nursing Practice Act, regulatory requirements, standards of care, and hospital practices. Serve as a role model to promote a positive environment and quality patient care. Essential Functions The essential functions listed below are general examples and not a description of comprehensive duties. Specific duties and responsibilities may vary depending on department or program needs without changing nature or scope of this position or level of responsibility. May be asked to perform other duties as assigned. Under the direct supervision of the Registered Nurse, the nurse extern observes the registered nurse assess, implement, plan and evaluate nursing care utilizing the nursing process Observes the RN providing teaching to patient and family and documents the same Observes the RN Initiating discharge planning and providing discharge instructions and documents the same Performs a variety of procedures/skills with successful completion of training Works collaboratively with team members to assure appropriate care is provided Observes the RN Assisting physicians with bedside procedures Prepares and maintains patient areas, utility rooms, Works to maintain the unit in good working order Handles care of patients appropriate to the ages of patients served as per Scope of Service Reports to Primary Nurse/Charge Nurse to meet the individual needs of each patient Demonstrates the ability to perform technical skills and procedures as evidenced by unit competency Job Qualifications Education High School graduate or equivalent Currently enrolled in or recent graduate of an accredited nursing program in r their senior year maintaining a GPA > 3.5 Eligibility Have completed pre-licensure preceptorship Submit 2 letters of recommendation from clinical educators or nursing instructors Optional submission of Letter of Recommendation from Clinical Preceptorship Submit a resume and cover letter Submit a reflection on their plan for career path and why they desire to be involved in the externship program. Interim nursing permit or Certified Nursing Assistant license Experience Six months working as a Certified Nursing Assistant preferred but not required Preceptorship in Acute Care preferred Experience working in health care preferred Licenses and Certifications Nurse Interim License or CNA license by externship Current American Heart Association BLS Certification Relevant departmental certification as required (i.e.: PALS, NRP) desired Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Ability to speak, read, write, and understand the English language Strong attention to detail Knowledge of Quality Control, Safety and Joint Commission standards Strong interpersonal skills Ability to work as an effective team player Basic computer skills Physical Demand and Working Conditions The Physical Requirements and Working Conditions in which the job is typically performed are available from the Occupational Health Department.
